The wrestling career of Lio Rush has been a very interesting one. Coming up through the indies, his high impact face paced style caught the attention of many. It wasn’t uncommon to see him mentioned alongside top level high flyers like Ricochet & Will Ospreay. He would even reach the heights of WWE, and was originally planned to win the WWE Intercontential Championship at Wrestlemania 35. Plans changed, but he would still become a champion for WWE, managing to claim the NXT Cruiserweight Championship from Drew Gulak, before losing it to Angel Garza. Lio Rush would be one of many cut from WWE in 2020 as a cost cutting measure thanks to COVID-19, and that might signal the end of his wrestling career.
Following his WWE release, he would send out a tweet stating “I legitimately might not ever wrestle again.” on May 4th. This came during the thick of speculation where people like him, Rusev, EC3, and other released stars would go in professional wrestling. Since 2019, Lio Rush had been releasing music onto Youtube, and on May 11th his debut album, Ever After would drop. It didn’t get much attention, but is ultimately a solid offering in the crowded space of hip-hop.
Lio Rush Focusing On Music For A While
Speaking with Fightful, he would clarify that initial comment on Twitter. “I feel like this was the perfect time to be away from wrestling and not jump right back into wrestling just because, I feel like, although my time in the WWE there’s been a lot of good times and great moments and great memories that will live on forever in the history books of WWE; I feel like there’s also been some bad times and some of those bad times have been pretty traumatizing for me emotionally.
So, my thought process was just, “Do I use this time away from wrestling in a time like this in the world to focus on things that I’ve always wanted to focus on, to have control of the things that I’ve always wanted to have control over? To spend time with my family? Just to be happy? Or do I want to just jump right back into the wrestling bubble in a time where I didn’t have control over a lot? Where I was unhappy, where I was frustrated, where I was confused. Just a lot of different emotions,”
Focusing on music is something that brings Lio Rush pleasure, and while it would be unfortunate if he never stepped back into a ring, he needs to do what is best for him. At only 25 and being as skilled as he is, this is unlikely to be the case but you never know. Would you be upset if Lio Rush wasn’t intending to wrestle anymore after his run in WWE?
