Back in 2017, fans were moaning and groaning about the seeing a use of cinematic style matches within WWE. We had just witnessed the ‘House of Horrors’ match, which was a follow up to the match between Randy Orton & Bray Wyatt from the previous months Wrestlemania. It was a very poorly received match, especially by the fans in attendance at the arena, forced to watch it on the giant screens. They made their displeasure very clear, loudly chanting ‘BORING’. But now in 2020, Orton feels fans would be singing a different tune if this match happened now, and feels that Wyatt and himself were ahead of the curve.
Randy Orton Defends The House Of Horrors Match
During his interview with Corey Graves for the After The Bell podcast, he’d speak on this now infamous match. “Of course, AJ and Undertaker were different. The whole cinematic experience, which Bray Wyatt and me did first in the House of Horrors most recently, but everyone kind of shit on it, you know? I feel like if that happened during the pandemic, it would have been the coolest thing ever.”
You can understand his argument here. It wasn’t too different from matches like The Boneyard Match or The Backlot Brawl which both happened recently. Randy also felt The House Of Horrors match was the first cinematic experience in WWE, which ignores things like the Supermarket Brawl between Stone Cold & Booker T, which had many cinematic touches.
The House Of Horrors Was Trying To Cash In
While within WWE, it’d been some time since a cinematic experience was seen, others were doing what was attempted here to much greater effect. This was done by Matt Hardy & Jeff Hardy over in Impact Wrestling, with the Ultimate Deletion. The fact that WWE chose to do a match like the House Of Horrors just months after Broken Matt Hardy became the talk of the wrestling industry is suspect at best.
Orton has a chance to redeem himself with ‘The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever’, which is a pre-taped affair. Wyatt already proved that he can do this match style perfectly with the ‘Firefly Funhouse’ match at Wrestlemania 36.
Do you think if Orton & Wyatt tried the House Of Horrors match in 2020, fans would have reacted more positively, or is a bad match just a bad match in this case? You can watch the match in full here, if you need a second viewing. Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
