Nothing like contacts and contract statuses to get fans jumpy and interested in who’s doing what and who’s going where. The latest rumor is Adam Cole possibly leaving the WWE and heading to AEW.
If this happens, this would be a huge coup for AEW and a major blow to WWE, NXT especially. Fans have already drawn a line on social media over this, and that only makes it all the more intriguing over the next few weeks.
It could happen
May 31 marked the one full year Adam Cole has been NXT Champion and it appears he has the WWE world at his feet, so why would he want to leave?
The obvious reason is his girlfriend, Britt Baker, wrestles for AEW. Add to that couples like to stay together, and even the WWE puts couple together on the same brand for that reason. This would allow them to wrestle with the same company and the same shows. It’d also give them a chance to work together as a team like Cody and Brandi Rhodes.
Another is he’s young, and while he has to wait for people to get out of the way in the WWE, he could rocket to the top in AEW. He may even prefer the seemingly more flexible schedule of AEW as they don’t have pay-per-views every month and allow creative freedom.
Add to this his contract reportedly ends this summer, and there’s been no news on his resigning. He could be resisting, he may have already agreed to a deal and no one’s said anything, or he may not have been offered one yet.
And then there’s the opportunity to prove himself elsewhere.
Let’s face it, NXT is widely regarded as the WWE’s best brand, and Cole has been an awesome champion. Is there anything for him to prove by going to one of the main brands? He’s seen how Shayna Baszler’s been turned from world beater to also ran in a heartbeat because Vince McMahon was allegedly unimpressed with her. Maybe he sees that as a possibility for himself if he moves to the promotion’s main brands?
AEW would give him another option to be with a major company (the way the WWE constantly reacts to what they do and copy their ideas shows they’re considered a threat).
It probably won’t happen
The stars may be aligning for Adam Cole to go to AEW, but to be honest, it probably won’t happen. He’s said to be happy where he’s at, and with potentially greater financial stability if he gets called up to the main brands, it’d make sense financially.
Besides, he’s currently king of NXT, and that’s a crown he may not be willing to give up. He has worked hard for it, and he’s recognized by many as one of, if not the best wrestler in the world. And by having the championship for so long just shows how much faith the WWE powers-that-be have in him. At least, on their developmental brand.
Plus, it’s a safe bet Vince McMahon will do everything in his power to prevent him from leaving.
The question then becomes what does Adam Cole really want to do?
