Last night, we witnessed Roman Reigns make his way back to WWE after months of absence, having left just before Wrestlemania. He was more aggressive than ever, dropping both new Universal ChampionThe Fiend with a wicked spear, and battered former champion Braun Strowman with a steel chair. Was he just eager to get back into the thick of it, or are we seeing a new side of Roman Reigns?
Roman Reigns Could Finally Be Turning Heel
For years now, WWE have been pushing Roman Reigns as the face of the company, but always getting mixed reactions from fans, often leaning more towards boos than cheers. This aggressive return is a perfect chance to atleast have Roman Reigns become more of an anti-hero type character, though that is the approach WWE has been taking with The Fiend in recent weeks.
He was leaning more towards the heel side of things, with him loudly trash talking them both. “I made you! You’re not a monster unless I’m here!” was directed at Strowman. “This has always been mine. You’re just a freak in a mask. You can’t handle the responsibility.” towards Wyatt.
All we know after this return is where his attention is, and that is on the Universal Championship.
The Main Event Of Payback Could Be Set
With just two shows separating Summerslam and Payback, this ending angle was tailor made to set up a big match for the Universal Championship. A triple threat match between Reigns, The Fiend and Strowman is perfectly set up now, with Reigns a likely winner. It could mean a short reign for The Fiend, making his victory at Summerslam all but pointless in the end.
He was destined to be the top champion on Smackdown this year, and would have been the one to topple Goldberg at Wrestlemania had he not left due to health concerns. Now he is back, and is right back on course for another world championship win. Fans are excited to see him again, and even more excited to see him with an extra bit of edge in his character.
