Rey Mysterio recently met a crossroads in his career, when his latest WWE contract came to a close. WWE would write him off TV with the Eye For An Eye match, which saw Mysterio lose. Now his son is teaming with Samoa Joe to face Seth Rollins & Murphy at Summerslam.
Mysterio could have chosen to go elsewhere, he got great offers, but in the end, it looks like he’ll be in WWE once again.
Rey Mysterio Got A Great Offer From AEW, But WWE Wins Out
Considering Mysterio is a bonafide legend in professional wrestling, AEW would have been foolish to not offer him a great contract. As reported by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the offer from AEW was guaranteeing the same money on a per-match basis as the WWE deal. However, the WWE deal ended up being more lucrative as it offered more dates.
It won’t be one of the huge five year contracts WWE uses, but will be longer than Mysterios previous 18 month deal. Nothing is signed or official, but the deal is stated to be “as close to official without confirmation of it being official.”
Mysterio Will Watch His Son Become A Star Up Close
Even if WWE didn’t offer the better deal, there is simply something there for him. Dominick Mysterio is making his proper WWE debut, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather before him, now a third generation wrestler. Having the chance to see and help your son grow into a great wrestler would be enticing for anyone, and that was likely something that helped Mysterio make his choice.
We might have seen some truly epic matches if Mysterio went to AEW. Matches with the likes of Omega, Fenix, Pentagon Jr, Scorpio Sky & MJF would have been great. He could have faced old rivals in Cody Rhodes & Chris Jericho, and been treated as a legend.
We will still see some great matches from Mysterio in what could be one of his final contracts. A retirement match with his son at Wrestlemania very well could be in the works to cap this contract off, but we will simply need to wait and see.
