The headline of the Summer Struggle 2020 tour on August 6th saw the first opening-round match of the NEVER 6-Man Tag Team Championship Tournament to crown the vacant title.
The match saw the CHAOS team of five-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada, three-time IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Champion Toru Yano, and current one-half of the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions Sho defeat the Bullet Club team of Yujiro Takahashi, Gedo, and Jado in 12 minutes and 3 seconds.
Despite the extremely low expectations from western fans, the match told an old school United States Mid Atlantic territory narrative. Yujiro, Gedo, and Jado wrestled a classic Pure Heel style that relied on them working smarter over producing a high work rate.
CHAOS took on the Pure Face role, and each played up to their opponents, providing a solid narrative. Yujiro again looked strong as he stood toe to toe with Okada while gaining the advantage over Sho during his portions of the match.
For Gedo and Jado’s physical limitations, they were able to hold up their end of the match and provide well-placed instances of cheating. However, CHAOS was able to obtain victory in the end with Sho submitting Jado with a Double Wrist Lock.
After the contest, Okada challenged Yujiro to face him in the qualifying round of the KOPW (seemingly King of Pro Wrestling) Title Tournament in a one versus three handicap match, with Gedo and Jado teaming with Yujiro.
The presumed match adds another element to the ongoing program between the former NEVER Openeweight Champion and former five-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion as the build towards Summer Struggle in Jingu continues.
It wouldn’t be shocking to see Yujiro get involved in the CHAOS teams’ semi-final match to give him the mental advantage going into a KOPW qualifying match.
