Finn Balor is now back on top of the NXT mountain, having beaten Adam Cole for the vacant NXT Championship this past week. This validates his return to the Black & Gold brand, something he feels has saved his career within WWE.
Finn Balor Was Burnt Out
Balor is of course in his second run in NXT, after a successful run on paper on the main roster. He’s the first ever Universal Champion, and also won the Intercontinental Championship along the way, giving fans some classic matches along the way. This had many scratching their heads when he came back to NXT, his original home in WWE.
During an interview with Metro.co.uk, ‘I feel like returning to NXT 11 months ago was definitely the right move for me. A lot of people questioned it, questioned my reason or my logic behind it. For me it was something that- I wanted to challenge myself in the ring, and it felt like on Raw & Smackdown I’d put it into cruise control and was just coasting along. I wanted that fresh challenge against fresh faces, people I wasn’t used to wrestling with.’
This helped contribute to some major burn out from Balor, which is why after losing to The Fiend at Summerslam 2019, he took time off and came back to NXT.
The Demon Will Come Back In Time
While we haven’t seen a glimmer of The Demon King alter ego since he came back to NXT. During its last few appearances, it lost it’s magic. Balor puts blame on WWE and himself in this situation.
‘I feel like we should have handled it better, I should have handled it better in the sense that I should have been the one to put my foot down and say, “Nah, I don’t think we should do this.”’
He’d go on to say ‘I think the return to NXT has helped me protect not only Finn and the prince, but my own integrity and also The Demon. I feel like the way we used it, we kinda used it as a bit of the crutch. As cool as the demon was, it was making Finn less cool in the sense that Finn would get his ass kicked and then the Demon would come and save the day.’
He has no desire to bring that character back just yet, but it’s not the end. He would rather have straight up wrestling matches for now, but The Demon will always be an option.
