Let’s get into some more First Month Fire with WWE RAW from January 18, 1993. This show featured three bouts and a lot of segments including the beef between Ric Flair and Mr. Perfect.
Mid-Tier
That’s right, there were no Low-Tier bouts! “Midnight Murderer” Marty Jannetty had a brief but solid squash match against pre-Thrasher Glen Ruth.
Nothing to really elaborate on about this match. Marty picked up the win in a mid-show time-eater. We also had HBK hyping his upcoming Royal Rumble showdown against Marty during the match.
I’m loving this show so far. The pacing of it and how we had promos during matches. Love it. This is when WWE was ahead of WCW production-wise when it came to putting a TV show together.
I mean this was something WWE always did but it allowed for them to get more promos in without killing the show’s flow.
Vinnie Mac was supposed to talk with Flair following his match with El Matador. It was an alright match that you knew wasn’t going to end decisively.
That’s because Mr. Perfect came out like “I will have my revenge!”–shout out to Henry Zebrowski of Last Podcast on the Left—and attacked Flair.
Exotic-Tier
After Repo Man sneaks color commentator Randy Savage at the top of the show, we had Mr. Perfect vs. Terry Taylor. This match was cooking with something.
Terry Taylor was an extremely capable wrestler who could talk on the mic but drew bad to mediocre gimmicks like some kind of magnet. How unfortunate.
I think the only gimmick I actually liked with him was when he was Terrence Taylor in WCW and had Alexandria York as his valet.
It’s weird how WCW managed to come up with a gimmick for him that required little promo work to push it. In WWE, it was…whatever for Taylor.
Anyway, this match saw Flair attacking Perfect! As you read above, yeah it came back to bite The Nature Boy. Mr. Perfect was so perfect he could finish a match after getting attacked.
The match worked well to push the ongoing hostilities between Flair and Perfect but on its own, it was the best match on the show.
WWE RAW January 18, 1993 Verdict: Exotic-Tier (8/10)
This was much better than the debut! I had a blast watching it as everything outside of Marty vs. Thrasher and the charity segment tied into Royal Rumble 1993.
It’s not the best WWE RAW but it was peak RAW as far as time being used wisely. I mean, they just had an hour block to work with and they got it done.
