Last week, AEW slightly stumbled into their second year with an overhyped anniversary show. However, if AEW is good for anything, it’s bouncing back. Tonight’s show is absolutely stacked, as we get the entire first round of the AEW World Championship contenders tournament, Britt Baker in action, a Fatal Four way tag team match, and MJF & Chris Jericho having steak dinner! Let’s break down the matches announced for tonight.
First Round Matches Of Championship Contenders Tournament
In a tournament set to end at Full Gear, eight men get a chance to punch their ticket to the AEW Championship. The first round will take place tonight, with some big matches. First we have Rey Fenix vs. Penta El Zero M, great tag team partners, but perhaps even better rivals in the ring. Expect a fast paced lucha libre showcase from this one.
Next up, Joey Janela vs. Kenny Omega, which is perhaps the most obvious match in the bunch. Janela hasn’t won a match on Dynamite all year, while Kenny Omega is one of the top stars in the company. Clearly an upset is possible, but Omega might as well have a first round bye. The winners of Fenix/Penta & Janela/Omega meet in the semi finals.
On the other side of the bracket, it starts with another potentially obvious match, Colt Cabana vs. Hangman Page. Cabana is a crafty veteran and has the backing of Dark Order, but Hangman Page’s redemption arc depends on him reaching the finals. Expect to see him struggle with this win, but likely make the semi-finals.
Finally, we have perhaps the most interesting match in the tournament. Wardlow vs. Jungle Boy, a match that is sure to pull in the female demo in the ratings. It’s set up to be a classic David vs. Giolath match, which could lead to another star making performance for Jungle Boy. Much like Fenix vs. Penta, this one is unpredictable. These matches are going to take up the bulk of Dynamite, and next week will have the semi-finals.
AEW Tag Team Championship Fatal Four Way Contenders Match
The first match for Full Gear will be properly set tonight on NXT, as a Fatal Four Way match will determine the next challengers for FTR. Private Party, Silver & Reynolds, Butcher & The Blade, and The Young Bucks will meet in said match, with first fall determining the contenders. Obviously, the biggest match for Full Gear is FTR vs. Young Bucks, something that has been teased since FTR arrived.
However, anything can happen in a match like this, and don’t count out a team like Silver & Reynolds, who have quietly been one of the most solid teams in the company for a while now. Regardless, FTR are confident they will keep their championships past Full Gear anyways.
Also announced for tonight is Britt Baker in action, as well as MJF & Chris Jericho discussing MJF joining The Inner Circle over dinner. What are you most looking forward to tonight on AEW Dynamite? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
