Will Hobbs was supposed to be part of a huge six man tag team match alongside Jon Moxley & Darby Allin, one that would have seen him mix it up with fellow big men in Lance Archer & Brian Cage. That match might have gotten canned due to Lance Archer being exposed to COVID-19, but that isn’t stopping the momentum of Will Hobbs, who is on a four match win streak. The FTW Championship might not be an officially recognized championship in AEW, but it’s on the line tonight, as Brian Cage finally meets someone his own size in the ring.
Brian Cage Shows His Uncanny Agility
This was a straight up slugfest from the start, Hobbs & Cage just running into each other with shoulder tackles. Cage would get moving, leapfrog over Hobbs and hit a back elbow, just to run into a lariat from Hobbs. Cage was right back up to try for a suplex, but Hobbs shifted his weight and landed on his feet, before running in with a cross body block. Hard hitting big man action out of the gate was what fans wanted, and it’s what they are getting.
Hobbs would throw some heavy blows in the corner, Cage spilled up and trapped Hobbs head in the turnbuckle before a superkick to the face. Cage would hit an electric chair drop for a near fall, needing to do better than that to stop Hobb. Hobb would take anything Cage threw at him and send it back, but Cage had a key advantage over Hobbs: his speed.
Cage slipped out of the way of Hobbs, rolled him through with a school by and hit a superkick, before hitting a Fallaway Slam and a standing moonsault press. A tight chinlock would just serve to make Hobbs angry, hitting a backdrop driver in response. Hobbs came back with a series of lariats and a jumping shoulder tackle, and went for a spinebuster before Cage countered, but nailed a snap powerslam.
Will Hobb Impresses Taz
Hobbs would nail a slam in the middle of the ring, but a flawed pin left Cage’s shoulders free. Cage came back with a pump handle facebuster, rocking Hobb. He’d pick him up for an F-5, and only got a two count, shocking everyone. Cage would set up another one, Hobbs slipped out and took a German Suplex, getting right back up and hitting Cage with one. They’d both hit the ropes and collide in the middle of the ring, a double down.
Back to their feet, they’d trade strikes, and Hobbs nailed his ‘Last Will & Testament’ Spinebuster, only getting a two count, and had to think about his next move. Hobbs went for a frog splash, missed and would be nailed with the Drill Claw. Still FTW World Champion, Brian Cage.
Following the match, Hobbs would be offered a chance to join Team Taz after a great match, or he gets jumped by Starks & Cage. Hobbs had backup arrive in the form of Darby Allin, and we wouldn’t see if Hobbs would take this chance or not.
