The marquee of G1 Climax Night 11 saw former IWGP Intercontinental Champion and G1 Climax 29 winner Kota Ibushi face former NEVER Openweight Champion and Los Ingobernables de Japon (LIJ) member Shingo Takagi.
Ibushi was coming off a G1 Climax 30 Night 9 victory against current Revolution Pro Wrestling (RevPro) Undisputed British Heavyweight Champion Will Ospreay.
G1 Climax 30: Ibushi v Shingo
Shingo was able to defeat Bullet Club member Yujiro during his latest tournament contest, allowing him to remain relevant pertaining to G1 Climax 30 Finals conversation.
Shingo was motivated coming into the match, and it showed with his form. He was able to meet the defending G1 Climax winner during every test.
When Ibushi asked the fighting spirit of Shingo a question, Shingo was able to answer with a problem for Ibushi.
Despite the form shown by Shingo, Ibushi didn’t back down from the challenge and was able to string together several impressive displays throughout the match.
While Ibushi was unable to unleash his typical chain of offense, he kept Shingo from steamrolling him with high impact and powerful offense.
Shingo was able to gain the fall at the 21 minutes and 56 seconds mark with his Last of the Dragon technique, moving him to 6 points, and allowing him to keep his path towards the G1 Climax 30 Finals.
The loss keeps Ibushi at 8 points and puts pressure on him to retain his form in the latter stages of the G1 Climax.
Ibushi’s final three matches are against current NEVER Openweight Champion Minoru Suzuki (October 10th), Bullet Club member Yujiro (October 13th), and Suzuki-Gun member Taichi (October 13th).
Shingo has former five-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion and CHAOS member Kazuchika Okada on October 10th in what should be a stiff challenge for Shingo.
With a few matches remaining, Shingo will need to win out and hope he at least ties with Ibushi to advance to the finals.
