At NXT Takeover 31, Finn Balor had arguably his best match ever against Kyle O’Reilly. It was his first defense in his second reign as NXT Champion, and simply a hard hitting and physical wrestling match, which left both men out of action for the weeks following. O’Reilly didn’t have any serious injuries, but Finn Balor suffered a broken jaw during this match, and has had successful surgery to repair this damage.
There Are No Current Plans For Finn Balor To Vacate The NXT Championship
Considering Finn Balor just won the vacant NXT Championship after Karrion Kross had to vacate following a shoulder injury, WWE likely aren’t too keen on having the championship go vacant once again. Balor is set for about five weeks of recovery, which should have him back in time to defend at Survivor Series.
The only major show between now and then is Halloween Havoc, which is headlined by two NXT Takeover 31 rematches, Damien Priest vs. Johnny Gargano & Io Shirai vs. Candice LeRae, with the added allure of gimmicks to be determined by a spin of the wheel. It’s a special episode of NXT, and while having Balor appear would make it even bigger, it doesn’t need him.
There are no plans to take the belt off Balor, but WWE would be fools to not have a backup plan incase Balor is out for longer than expected.
The NXT Championship Has Been A Bit Cursed In 2020
While things started nicely for the NXT Championship in 2020, with Adam Cole coming into the year and continuing his record breaking reign, it all went downhill on the build to the Great American Bash. Firstly, one half of Indus Sher would spoil the result of the Keith Lee vs. Adam Cole match, which saw Lee reach the top of the NXT mountain, for all of a month. Lee would have a quick defense against Dijakovic, and then lose to Karrion Kross. That match saw Kross injure his shoulder, having this championship cycle through two champions in rapid fashion, have a match result spoiled, and a new champion injured.
Then when things start to normalize with Finn Balor becoming NXT Champion, and then in his first defense? He suffers a broken jaw. This is not the best start to an NXT Championship reign, and continues a rough year for the belt. We can only hope that Balor heals up, and is able to have some more great matches in this reign, without getting injured.
