WWE has a long history of just throwing two directionless wrestlers together and calling them a tag team. Sometimes this works, like Cesaro & Sheamus, other times, it doesn’t like Chad Gable & Shelton Benjamin. However, there is the potential for a very solid tag team in WWE right now, one that plays off the real like friendship of Gable & former Mr. Money in The Bank, Otis.
Chad Gable Recounts Their Friendship
It’s easy to forget, but Otis is a deadly amateur wrestler much like Gable. While Gable was on the After The Bell podcast with Corey Graves, he’d speak about his friendship with Otis.
“Our relationship dates back to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. We probably met in 2010 but we both lived at the Olympic Training Center starting in 2011 and discovered that we both shared a love for pro wrestling very early on. We would spend every waking minute outside of training for the Olympics watching WWE or some form of wrestling, and we were best friends from that moment. Once I got signed with WWE, he was still amateur wrestling but he was so done with it at that point. He wanted to get to WWE.”
Ten years of friendship is nothing to shake a finger at, and they’ve both made it to WWE and have become solid parts of the show. Sadly, neither really has much going on at the moment, so it might be the perfect time for best friends to be added to the lacking tag team division.
Otis Just Lost His Tag Team Partner, And There’s No Feud In Sight
Until last Sunday, Otis was already in a tag team with Tucker. Heavy Machinery was a perfect unit, with Tucker bringing the in-ring skills, and Otis bringing enough charisma for both. Tucker turned on Otis after being sick of being an afterthought, and cost his partner the MITB contract in the process. Sadly, Tucker is on RAW & Otis is on Smackdown, making this nasty split odd.
It does open Otis up to looking for a new support system, and with Gable looking to get back on track after months of being called Shorty G, this could be perfect. They’d add to a pathetic tag team division on Smackdown, and Otis could help the odd charisma of Gable shine through once again. Running a tag team based on their amateur skills and meshing in some comedy would make for a great time.
