Cross-sport fights have become a regular talking point over the past couple of years since Conor McGregor stepped into the boxing ring with Floyd Mayweather. Talks surrounded McGregor returning to the ring to take on Manny Pacquiao have continued over recent weeks, and will likely be something that is making headlines for the next couple of months.
However, could there be a different cross-sport fight that has a more realistic chance of happening sooner rather than later involving Katie Taylor and Cris Cyborg?
UFC News: Cyborg Challenges Boxing Champion
The rumours that have reported Cyborg to take on Taylor in a boxing match has sped up over recent weeks, with MMA expert Gareth Davies revealing that he has already spoken to all parties, and believes that a fight would be difficult to arrange. He revealed that Taylor’s promoter Eddie Hearn is interesting in the fight, which would see the two-weight boxing champion take on one of the most dangerous MMA athletes in the history of the sport.
Cyborg poured more gas on the fire recently, as she revealed to Sky Sports that she is interested in a bout, and specially named Taylor as her preferred opponent. There is huge excitement already centring around this fight as it could be the biggest combat event in the history of women’s sport. It would pit a fighter that has won MMA titles across all four major organisations against a two-weight world champion and Olympic gold-medal winning boxer.
UFC News: Could There Still Be Issues?
It was revealed by Davies that there could still be issues in ironing out the final details, as those close to the deal have revealed that Bellator bosses are hopeful that a two-fight agreement can be reached. However, the issue that the Taylor party have with that deal, is that Bellator bosses want a second fight to happen between the pair in a cage.
That is something that Taylor and Hearn are unlikely to agree to, as Taylor is at the peak of her powers in the world of boxing. Taylor has won all 16 of her professional fights, while she has won six of these through knockout. Taylor’s last fight was on the undercard of the Dillian Whyte and Alexander Povetkin fight, as she beat Delfine Persoon via unanimous decision. Taylor will be back in action on the 14th November, as she takes on Miriam Gutierrez.
