I was watching some XPW Monday Nightmare for our First Month Fire series. In one episode we had Danny Doring vs. Kaos fighting over the XPW TV Title.
Danny Doring is best known for his time in ECW in a team with Roadkill and as the final ECW World Tag Team Champions.
In ECW, since he was mainly a tag team competitor towards the end when he was featured on TV and at PPVs more often, it could be easy to overlook Doring.
However, after seeing his match vs. Kaos in XPW, I began seeking out his singles stuff from the early 2000s. There’s a little on YouTube, plenty of him in tag action, though.
Fortunately, he pops up on several indy tapes and DVDs I had and the guy totally held his own in singles. It makes you wonder why he wasn’t used as a singles competitor elsewhere.
Salvaging Danny Doring
I don’t know if he actually needs to be salvaged or fantasy booked. He would’ve been in his late 20s-early 30s when the U.S indies leaned heavily towards lighter stars.
There’s a gap of times between ECW’s closing and his signing to WWE in 2005 where he should’ve been a talent on Ring of Honor or Impact Wrestling’s lists as a roster member.
I mean, early ROH was an extension of 1999-2001 ECW while Impact Wrestling had an X-Division that Doring could’ve been a strong hand in. The guy could’ve wrestled that fast-paced style easily.
Doring could also do the big moves and dives style of the indies at the time. While his early ECW gimmick was in contrast to what he could actually do, Doring gelled well with opponents.
I’d say Doring in the early years of the TNA X-Division could’ve worked. The company had Kid Kash, Jerry Lynn, Psicosis, Raven, Sabu and other guys who came through ECW in the first year.
While those were some of the more popular ECW stars, I could see Danny Doring fitting in at that time. As for Ring of Honor in its early years, probably in the first year but as a regular tag team competitor.
