We’re knocking out the third and fourth episode of WCW Monday Nitro! The early shows have been very enjoyable overall so let’s see if the September 18, 1995 episode holds up.
Storylines On This Episode
The Giant really let Hogan have it at Fall Brawl 1995, breaking his neck after invading the War Games match!
Mean Gene said that his “father” Andre the Giant would be disappointed in him. The Giant said that Andre was still alive, he would’ve joined him in crushing Hulk Hogan.
Ric Flair and Arn Anderson are still beefing. With Brian Pillman in the mix, Flair is fired up to filet the former Flyin‘ Brian!
While pumping iron on the set of Baywatch—remember that show—Macho Man is jumped by “The Taskmaster” Kevin Sullivan.
Ric Flair and others ran up to run Sullivan off. MeanMean Gene had an interview with Randy Savage who didn’t take kindly to Flair’s help.
He said Hulk Hogan would recover but didn’t care for Hogan having Luger on their War Games team since he was accidentally hit by The Total Package.
Savage predicts that Sting, Luger, and Jimmy Hart would end up joining the Dungeon. Luger takes offense to Savage’s statements. A fight is brewing between the two!
An interview from pre-Fall Brawl is shown with Mean Gene talking with Hogan who rode up on his motorcycle. The Giant rolls up in his monster truck and runs over the motorcycle!
This was shown on WCW Main Event but I loved this segment. The Giant’s cartoon villain laugh and Hogan pounding on the truck always got a laugh from me.
Mid-Tier
Harlem Heat managed to win the WCW World Tag Team Championship from Dick Slater and Bunkhouse Buck at Fall Brawl 1995.
They came out to fight the American Males in an unsanctioned match. Unfortunately, their third reign was ended after Sister Sherri was distracted by the dashing Col. Robert Parker.
While the match was brief, it was fast and exciting! WCW promoted Nitro as the fastest hour in wrestling and these short matches with a lot of action lives up to the show’s direction.
That said, this would’ve been a really nice match with more time. Harlem Heat had proven that they’re the team to beat and the American Males were a solid combination.
As a TV match, it was right there in the middle.
“Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff defeated an incredible talent in Johnny B. Badd. This was a well-paced back and forth match. It kept the Nitro pace and served as a solid TV bout.
In the main event, Flair really beat Pillman’s ass. Those chops had a little extra stank on them. Pillman ricocheted all over the ring and ringside as they went at it.
The match wasn’t all Flair, Pillman got his licks in but once that Figure Four was locked in, it was a done deal. This was a really good TV match action and pace-wise.
WCW Monday Nitro #3 Verdict: Mid-Tier (7/10)
The third episode of WCW Monday Nitro was sprint-y. There were no lulls in the action, the promos weren’t lengthy, WCW had an hour and they used it well with quick, brief versions of what would’ve been great matches on PPV.
That said, I could’ve done with one ten minute match. That aside, this was a good show.
