After eight weeks of the best technical wrestling we will see this year, we have a new Pure Champion in Ring Of Honor.
In an epic battle, Jonathan Gresham would defeat Tracy Williams with the Cobra Twist to become the first Pure Champion since 2006, when Bryan Danielson merged that championship with his ROH World Championship.
This was a huge moment for Gresham, who is now draped in gold, also being one half of the ROH Tag Team Champions. What is next for The Octopus?
Jonathan Gresham Wants To Bring ROH Back To The Glory Days
For many years, the Ring Of Honor World Championship truly meant something. Holding it meant you were the best wrestler in the world. This rang true when it was held by men like Bryan Danielson, Nigel McGunniess, Austin Aries, Samoa Joe and more held it.
Even as recently as Jay Lethals 427 day reign with the title, it meant exactly that. However, somewhere along the line, the belt lost its lustre, and the champions are no longer viewed as highly as they once were.
This leads Gresham to where he is at right now. Back in the day, the Pure Championship was the number two title in the company. Right now, it could end in the same spot, but not if Gresham has anything to do with it.
Holding that belt means Jonathan Gresham is the best pure wrestler in the world, maybe the best wrestler period. ROH had always been the innovators, the alternative, a bastion of freedom in professional wrestling. Gresham wants to do that again, and usher in a new era for Ring Of Honor.
Will He Look To Take The ROH Championship Off Rush?
While Gresham bleeds the spirit of Ring Of Honor, can the same be said about their top champion, Rush? Rush is in his second reign, after losing to PCO at Final Battle in 2019 and quickly refocusing and reclaiming the top prize.
He’s got a branch of Los Ingobernables at his back with Kenny King and ROH TV Champion Dragon Lee, making him hard to touch.
However, Gresham is not alone. He has The Foundation, both Jay Lethal & Tracy WIlliams backing him up, and they carry the same goals as Gresham, they want to purify ROH. Gresham has said Rush is not the champion Ring Of Honor needs, instead viewing him as that.
This almost sets the stage for a faction war in ROH once again. For years, the show was run by Bullet Club, but now they’ve managed to create two new fresh stables, and this is ignoring whatever Vincent and Tyler Bateman have planned. Lifeblood was a failure, and The Kingdom is dead, but they gave way to where we are today.
The restart of Ring Of Honor gave them new life, the Pure Wrestling tournament winning back fans that felt long lost. It’s truly a new era for this company, but who’s side are you on going forward? Will you be rooting for La Faccion Ingornable or The Foundation?
