As 2020 comes to a close, it’s time for the Wrestlemania rumor mill to start getting fired up. After this year’s Wrestlemania was an odd empty arena experience, and with the world finally starting to recover from COVID-19 with some promising breakthroughs, WWE has big plans for this year. They finally have Roman Reigns as the talk of the wrestling industry, his Tribal Chief character has been critically praised and fans are on his side.
This means that he needs a big opponent for Wrestlemania next year. We all want The Rock, but that likely won’t happen. Instead, Reigns is reported to get another hall of fame talent, another former WCW World Champion who made a successful comeback tour in recent years. No, not David Arquette (though some might prefer him in this role), but the planned opponent from last year. Cue the music and put a crash pad on his door, it’s time for Goldberg to make his way back to the ring, as per the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
Vince McMahon Wanted Someone With Star Power For Roman Reigns
Right now on Smackdown Live, WWE has set up three potential contenders for Roman Reigns in the coming months. Big E, Daniel Bryan, and his opponent for TLC, Kevin Owens. These are three proven names, all former World Champions within WWE (if you could Big E as NXT Champion), and very popular baby faces with heavy fan support. Anyone of them could be built into a perfect opponent for Reigns.
Fans have been clamouring for a Big E singles run for years, while Daniel Bryan was the man who arguably started fan backlash of Reigns back at Fastlane 2015. However, fan opinion has been well proven to not be what WWE goes with. Instead, we get what Vince McMahon wants, and he’s been trying to get this match for years.
Earlier this year, Universal Champion Goldberg was set to defend against Reigns, before Reigns pulled out due to health concerns. This was COVID-19 related, not Goldberg dropping people on their head related. Instead, Goldberg lost clean to Braun Strowman, and has not been seen or heard from since. That will likely change in the coming months, as Vince McMahon feels he needs a big value name for Reigns at Wrestlemania. Without Undertaker or Lesnar, best he has is Goldberg.
Obviously, we are still well off from Wrestlemania, and plans change at the tick of a clock within WWE. Do you think Roman Reigns vs. Goldberg will finally happen in 2021? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
