The death of Jon Huber, better known under his ring names of Brodie Lee and Luke Harper has truly shaken wrestling fans everywhere. We haven’t seen this level of outpouring of love and sorrow since the death of Eddie Guerrero over a decade ago, but much like Guerrero, Brodie Lee was a once in a lifetime talent. Whenever he got a chance in the spotlight, he took it. This made it hard to narrow down just five matches in his career, so let’s look at seven of his absolute best, as a way to remember what he gave to us as fans.
7. Luke Harper vs. Dolph Ziggler – WWE TLC 2014
With WWE’s annual Tables, Ladders and Chairs PPV just having passed, this ladder match was fresh on many’s minds. Harper went to war with Dolph Ziggler a month earlier on Monday Night RAW to claim the WWE Intercontinental Championship. Then they went on top that match in every way with one of the best ladder matches of the decade, and one that will forever be brought up as one of the best ladder matches ever.
6. Mr. Brodie Lee vs. Dustin Rhodes – AEW Dynamite #49
Just a few weeks after Brodie Lee tore through Cody Rhodes to become the second ever TNT Champion, he had to face his first test as champion. Enter Dustin Rhodes, a man who was beat down alongside his little brother, and a man who also wanted to help the Rhodes family regain their gold. It was one of the hardest hitting matches of the year, and showed just how hard Rhodes could still go when given the spotlight. Just two heavy hitters going to war, a classic formula for a great match.
5. Luke Harper vs. Randy Orton – WWE Elimination Chamber 2017
On the road to Wrestlemania in 2017, Randy Orton finally turned his back on The Wyatt Family. The match was clear, Bray Wyatt vs. Randy Orton. However, many fans rightfully wanted Luke Harper in the match over the WWE Championship, due to this classic from Elimination Chamber. Harper had never looked this good in a singles match in WWE before, but he went toe to toe with one of the most decorated champions in company history and looked every bit his equal. Sadly, the Wrestlemania match stayed a singles affair, and a dull one at that.
4. Daniel Bryan & Roman Reigns vs. Erick Rowan & Luke Harper – WWE Hell in A Cell 2019
In one of his final televised matches for WWE, back in 2019 he joined his long-time partner Erick Rowan for one last crusade. He’d helped Rowan defeat Reigns at the previous months PPV, and now they were set for a rare Tornado Tag Team match. Add in expert technician Daniel Bryan, and you had a show stealing match on a rather bleak card. It was a match that was as fun as it was brutal, and a great way for Harper to have ended his WWE run.
3. Mr. Brodie Lee vs. Cody Rhodes – AEW Dynamite #54
Not everyone gets to end their career on a Match of the Year contender, but Brodie Lee did just that. While he had every intention to return to the ring after this brutal dog collar match with Cody Rhodes, fate had other plans. This match showed that Brodie Lee had a long career ahead of him, making it hard to rewatch, but it was a masterclass in how to bring a brutally old-school match type back. All future Dog Collar Matches will be rightfully judged by this one, which can only be watched with a sense of ‘What could have been next’ forever haunting it.
2. The Shield vs. The Wyatt Family – Elimination Chamber 2014
Once upon a time, WWE had what could have been two of the greatest factions of all time in their hands. On one hand, you had The Hounds of Justice in The Shield, and on the other the creepy backwater cult of The Wyatt Family. Both teams were fan favorites going into this six man tag team match, which had chants of ‘This is Awesome’ before the bell even rang! What followed was 22 minutes of insane action, and a star making performance for Luke Harper especially. Any match between these teams is a must see, but this one was something special.
1. Mr. Brodie Lee vs. Jon Moxley – AEW Double Or Nothing 2020
All everyone wanted to see when Mr. Brodie Lee made his debut in AEW was to see this monster hold gold. AEW knew this, and they immediately put him in the ring with AEW World Champion Jon Moxley at Double or Nothing 2020. This was the first and only chance Lee had in a main event role, and he made the most of it, as he went blow for blow in a brutal title match that had to end by referee decision as Lee refused to tap to a rear naked choke. It showed he belonged in the company, and at the top. Had life played out differently, Mr. Brodie Lee would have been AEW World Champion someday.
