After redeeming his loss to Randy Orton and having one of the best matches of the year with Roman Reigns at Survivor Series, he needed a new challenger. AJ Styles would overcome Matt Riddle & Keith Lee to get a chance to become a three time WWE Champion. The build left a lot to be desired, but their match was always going to deliver.
It might have actually been better without the TLC stipulation, but they did their best with the match and produced a worthy addition to the matches lore. In the end, The Miz was added to the match, but even having a fresh third man wasn’t enough to end McIntyre as he shoved Styles off a ladder and took Miz out with The Claymore to grab the belt without issue. Now without the MITB contract looming over him, what’s next?
Drew McIntyre Won’t Be Going Down Until Crowds Are Back
Ever since Wrestlemania, Drew McIntyre has been the main reason to watch WWE. His championship matches with everyone from Bobby Lashley to AJ Styles have been nothing short of amazing, but he’s yet to have a defense in-front of a live crowd. His first reign went without getting a proper reaction from fans, and it would be a waste to put the belt back on him only to take it off him again before fans showed up.
There are a few potential opponents ready for Drew McIntyre after this win. The most obvious two are Braun Strowman & Sheamus. Strowman was suspended before getting a chance to even qualify to face Drew McIntyre, and has been waiting impatiently to get back. He’s someone who has been a steady challenger for world championships and is always able to provide a good match.
Sheamus Would Be A Solid Next Opponent If They Want To Save Strowman
If Strowman doesn’t get the next shot, it will have to be Sheamus. Sheamus has become a close ally of McIntyre in the last few months, a friendship bridging the face & heel dynamic of old.
It’s an obvious match, but a hard hitting brawl between these old friends could be just what WWE needs to kick off 2021 with a bang. Sheamus had an underrated run in 2020 without much reward, and this could be a way to show apprication for The Celtic Warrior.
