The WWE likes to find every place to make the most of the WWE Network, and they have once again done that by bringing back the Slammy Awards. The awards ceremony, which the company would like to think is their Oscars, was typically a part of Monday Night Raw during one of the final shows of the year.
However, this year, for the first time, it will get its own place on the WWE Network. The event will be taking place on the 23rd December, and there is a wealth of talent nominated for the awards. The biggest of which will be the Superstar of the year.
WWE News: Roman Reigns Leads Nominations
There wasn’t much doubt when it came to the nominations for the Superstar of the Year that there will be some huge names included in the list. Both current world champions in the men’s division have been nominated, with Drew McIntyre and Roman Reigns likely to be among the favourites to win the award. Reigns has been the best thing on SmackDown since returning, as his heel turn has saw the Big Dog reach the heights that many knew to be possible.
After winning the Universal Championship, he has been embroiled in a heated battle with his cousin Jey Uso, and that promises to be a story that will lead him straight to the main event of WrestleMania. McIntyre will be many people’s pick for the award, as he has achieved everything this year. The Scot won the Royal Rumble back in January, and has gone on to become a two-time WWE Champion. There is no doubt anymore that McIntyre is a main event player for good.
WWE News: Other Names Included
Longest reigning SmackDown women’s champion Bayley is also among the contenders to win the prize, and few would argue against the Role Model winning. Her former tag team partner Sasha Banks is also in the discussion to win the award too. Raw Women’s champion Asuka has enjoyed two title reigns this year, after winning the gold for the first time during the Money in the Bank ladder match.
The women that she won the title off, Becky Lynch, is also among the contenders to win the award. A success for The Man will certainly cap an exciting December, as she recently gave birth for the first time. Charlotte Flair is the final female nominated, while Braun Strowman, The Fiend and Randy Orton also get nods.
