Hello and welcome to WWE Smackdown Results!
Despite the spoilers that we released earlier, we’re looking forward to tonight’s show as there are plenty of storylines to help set the stage.
Unfortunately, the NFL games went a little long so the beginning of Smackdown was preempted by the post game show by ten minutes.
Universal Championship Steel Cage Match – Roman Reigns (c) (w/Paul Heyman) vs. Kevin Owens
The rules are one of the few constant ones in the WWE where to win one has to pin or submit their opponent, or escape the cage over the top or through the door.
Once in the ring, Owens closed the cage door and the referee locked it.
They started off exchanging blows, but Reigns gained the upper hand early on and hit a headbutt, then hit a big boot on Owens off the ropes for a pin attempt.
Reigns threw Owens’ face first into the cage two times and then hit a Samoan Drop for a near pinfall.
Reigns went for the Superman Punch, but Owens ducked and hit a DDT to get a breather.
Owens followed it with a right hand, and then a kick and series of rights before he threw Reigns into the cage.
Owens was nailed with a right hand, but came off the ropes to drop Reigns with a clothesline and then he hit a standing senton but no pin attempt.
Owens then ran into a boot that he caught, then hammered away on Reigns and stomped him in the corner before hitting a cannonball for a near pinfall.
Reigns countered a popup powerbomb into a leg drop for a near pinfall.
Reigns hit with a headbutt to send Owens into a corner, then hit a shoulder before he put Owens on the top rope.
Owens fought Reigns off, and Owens hit a frog splash from the top rope for a near pinfall as we headed to commercial.
Finish fest
Back from commercial, Reigns blocked a superkick and hit a sit out powerbomb for a near pin.
Reigns pounded Owens with several rights in the corner, but Owens met him coming off the ropes and they exchanged right before Owens hit a pop up powerbomb for a pin attempt.
Owens picked Reigns up, but Reigns drove him into a corner and drove his shoulder into Owens. Reigns then put him on the top rope again.
And again, Owens tried to fight him off but Reigns drove Owens’ head into the cage and went for a superplex.
Owens hit a Fisherman Buster from the top rope for another near pinfall.
Owens went for a stunner, but Reigns shoved him off and hit a Superman Punch for a near pinfall.
Owens hit with a right, and a furious Reigns threw him into the cage twice and pounded on him before he locked in a guillotine on Owens as he was stuck on the apron between the ropes and cage.
Owens grabbed Reigns’ head and hung him up on the ropes to break the hold.
Owens countered a spear with a stunner for a near pinfall as we headed to commercial.
Jey strikes
WWE Smackdown Results were back from commercial, Owens was trying to escape over the top of the cage but Reigns caught him.
The two fought on the top rope as Owens hit with a headbutt and then pounded on Reigns’ hands to force him to drop.
Owens headed to the top of the cage, but Reigns caught Owen’s left ankle as Owens was nearly over the top.
They were back to fighting on the top rope, exchanging blows before Owens hit another headbutt and a superkick.
Instead of climbing out for the easy win, Owens attempted a senton bomb, but Reigns got his knees up.
Reigns then hit a spear for a near pinfall, and doubt was clear on Reigns’ face.
Reigns headed for the door, but Owens caught him by the ankle and Reigns tried to drag Owens out with him.
Owens grabbed the door and slammed it into Reigns’ face, and then bounced Reigns’ head off the cage a dozen times.
Owens headed for the open door, but Jey Uso slammed the door into his head.
Owens still almost made it to the floor, but Reigns puled him back in. Owens then hit him with a superkick, but Reigns countered a pop up powerbomb with a Superman punch.
Owens then sidestepped a Reigns’ spear and Reigns went headfirst into the cage and Owens hit another stunner, then crawled toward the door.
Jey apparently cut a hole in the cage and he handcuffed Owens to the cage just out of range of the door as Owens couldn’t reach the floor.
Reigns looked relieved as he casually walked out of the cage while taunting Owens.
This was a great match despite the constant finishers, and the fact it was first up made it evident Reigns would win even without knowing what the spoilers were.
On the floor, a victorious Reigns held the title up to taunt Owens, and then he laughed at him.
WWE Smackdown Results don’t know about anyone else, but does it feel like they’re looking for any and every excuse to keep the title on Reigns instead of having him lose it?
