Fight fans were gearing up for something special on Saturday night, and something special is precisely what they got from Max Holloway. Holloway promised fans a performance unlike anything that they had seen before, and that was exactly what they got. It was a stunning display by Holloway to claim the win against Calvin Kattar, but the result only tells half of the story.
He landed on 59.9% of his punches in that fight, as he landed 447 of the 746 punches that he threw. As well as that, he landed 59.8% of the significant strikes that he attempted. Holloway even was able to take time to himself midway through the fight to talk to the announce desk, as he claimed that he was the best boxer in the UFC. It was everything that you would expect from an exhibition; except this was no exhibition.
UFC News: Holloway Thrives On Fight Island
Holloway is no stranger to delivering an excellent performance, but what we saw on Saturday was unlike anything that we have seen before. It was a dominant display as he picked apart Kattar without event getting out of second gear. Kattar had no answer for Holloway on Saturday, and even when he threw punches, Holloway somehow was still able to get out of the way of them without even looking at his opponent.
Some would say it was disrespectful to his opponent, which could be accurate, but it was his showmanship that really got the world talking. It was an excellent start to 2021 for the UFC, and Holloway could already be targeting a huge fight later in the year to continue what he showed over the weekend.
UFC News: What’s Next For Holloway?
There are certainly a lot of doors open for Holloway after that impressive performance. The most likely scenario will see him go on to face the featherweight champion later in the year. That opponent will be determined after a title fight between Alexander Volkanovski and Brian Ortega in just two months time.
However, recent reports have claimed that Holloway will be staying in Abu Dhabi for the next couple of weeks, as he was to act as a stand-in for Dustin Poirier should he be unable to fight on Conor McGregor’s return. The Irishman mocked Holloway’s claim that he was the best boxer in the UFC on social media, and that has only fuelled the fire that there could be a fight between the two further down the line.
