Superstar Spectacular is a chance for WWE fans to get to know some of the budding talents from the region. However, Guru Raaj might have bitten off more than he could chew. He’s the first high flier to come to WWE from India, but he’s got the current NXT Champion Finn Balor for his debut match.
Raaj is from a small village in India, and a natural athlete with a martial arts background, but only ever wanted to be a professional wrestler. Commentary was sure to note that as a kid, he was run over by a cow. After a great WWE tryout, he gets the chance to show how much he’s grown after a year of training under UK legend Robbie Brookside. It’s a non-title match, but a win here would help him jump into the mix of challengers like Pete Dunne & Karrion Kross.
Guru Raaj Is Impressive
Faced with one of NXT’s best, Raaj remained calm and collected as they locked up. Balor grabbed the wrist, and Raaj rolled to break the grip and took a wrist for his own. Raaj was outwrestled by the veteran Balor, and was taken down the mat, only to pop up and get Balor with a quick pinfall attempt for one. Balor won’t have an easy time here, but grabbed another headlock. He was shoved off, but ran through Raaj with a shoulder tackle.
Balor would run the ropes, and Raaj leapfrogged over and hit a dropkick, before getting the side headlock takeover. Raaj maintained this hold, even after Balor tried to send him off the ropes twice. Balor finally got him off, only for Raaj to go for a Sunset Flip, but Balor rolled through and nailed the basement dropkick.
Don’t Step To Finn Balor As A Rookie
Balor would apply an abdominal stretch, but Raaj broke free with a hip toss. Raaj got some knife edge chops, and a high back elbow to Balor. A running senton was followed by a kip up into a dropkick, Raaj getting some steam. Balor would shut this down with some hard strikes in the corner, including a hard running chop of his own.
The slingblade dropped Raaj, and put him in position for the Meet The Woo dropkick, but Raaj got the jumping enzuguri! Raaj got a roll up for two, nearly pinning Balor, before throwing some high speed kicks, ending with a hook kick. Heading to the top rope, Raaj hit the diving crossbody for a near fall, Balor barely kicking out!
Raaj went for a slam, and was countered into the final cut. The dropkick landed, as did the Coup De Grace. It might be a Tuesday, but a Bloody Sunday dropped Raaj on his head to end this match.
Guru Raaj is nowhere near the level of Finn Balor yet, but he’s got loads of potential. He was able to get some near falls on the reigning NXT Champion, a major accomplishment in it’s own right. Match Rating: 3/5 (***)
