Things have certainly been heating up between Deontay Wilder and his former trainer Mark Breland over the past couple of days. Breland has laid shots on the former heavyweight champion, and claimed that Wilder’s career in the ring is over. Not one to lie down, Wilder immediately slammed back at his former trainer and continued to allege that the trainer tampered with his water before his re-match against Tyson Fury last year.
It isn’t the first time that Wilder has made the accusation, as he famously fired the trainer after he threw in the towel against the reigning heavyweight champion after Wilder was being well-beaten during the famous re-match 12 months ago.
Boxing News: Wilder Shocked By Trainer
In a blistering response to Breland’s claims, Wilder admitted that he was slightly hurt by his comments, and even teased that the reason for his comments could be down to jealously on the part of the former trainer towards the former world champion. It isn’t the first time that Wilder’s future in the sport has been questioned though, but Wilder remains determined to return to the ring at some point in the near future.
He still has his heart set on a rematch against Fury, as he believes that he is contractually obliged to the trilogy fight after losing their rematch in 2020. However, it isn’t known whether Wilder is in the right on this front, as many believe that the date that the fight had to happen by has now been passed. That could mean that the American would have to take on another huge challenge in order to reclaim a mandatory challenger tag.
Boxing News: What’s Next For Wilder?
It has been nearly 12 months since Wilder’s last fight now, and his decision on his next opponent could be taken out of his own hands. Talks between Fury and Anthony Joshua over a massive unification bout look to have reached their final stages, with an announcement on the date and venue of the fight set to be announced very soon.
That is set to be a two-fight deal between the two champions, which could both take place this calendar year depending on the date of the first contest. That would mean that Wilder will have to find a new opponent to face before the end of the year, and a name that has constantly been muted is Dillian Whyte, as the two heavyweights have clashed on numerous occasions in the past.
