At the Royal Rumble, longtime WWE got a heavy dose of nostalgia when the theme song of Christian hit during the main event thirty man over the top rope battle royale. Fans have been hoping for him to get cleared to compete for years, especially after Daniel Bryan was able to return after being forced into retirement with similar concussion related issues.
That wish has finally come true, and Christian even got close to winning the match, reaching the final four before being thrown out by Seth Rollins. However, despite not winning at Royal Rumble, he might still have a ticket to Wrestlemania, in a match that is seven years in the making.
Christian Retired As Number One Contender For The Intercontinental Championship
Before retiring in 2014, his final match was a Fatal Four Way on the March 24th episode of Monday Night RAW. The opening match on the card was a Fatal Four Way match, to determine the next challenger for the Intercontinental Championship. Christian would defeat Alberto Del Rio, Dolph Ziggler & Sheamus to become number one contender, but the match would never come about.
Shortly after the match, Christian was quietly retired due to concussion related injuries. He’d join Edge in the early retirement club, and got to work on the Edge & Christian Show That Totally Reeks Of Awesomeness.
Instead, the next title shot went to Ziggler, who lost before the champion faced Bad News Barrett at Extreme Rules, who won to enter his fourth reign. While it’s unclear how long a title shot is good for, Christian earned the shot, and never got to use it.
And Big E Was The Champion He Was Set To Face
To make things even better, the champion seven years ago was none other than a pre New Day Big E. They wouldn’t form until later in 2014, having their first match in November. Fast forward to now, and Christian is back, with Big E once again the Intercontinental Championship, now in his second reign.
Big E himself remembers that Christian never got his shot, and wants the match. Undoubtedly, Christian would love to return from retirement and win his fourth Intercontinental Championship at Wrestlemania.
