There are still two months to go before WrestleMania gets underway on the 10th April. As was the case last year, the event will once again be a two night affair, which means that fans will be set for a whole weekend of high-adrenaline action.
However, for the current champions, there could be a nervy road to the biggest show of the year, as there are still two PPVs before the action gets underway. Drew McIntyre and Roman Reigns are expected to keep hold of their belts before the huge show, but there could be a twist in the tale in the case of Asuka.
WWE News: Could Asuka Drop The Title Before Mania?
It’s fair to say that Asuka’s title reign to this point has been underwhelming to say the very least. The Empress hasn’t been blessed with a huge variety of challengers for the gold, which has reflected badly on her reign. Instead of competing in singles action throughout much of the past 12 months, she has instead been involved in tag team feuds alongside Charlotte Flair.
Most championship reigns are headlined by one standout rivalry that fans remember for years to come, and that just hasn’t been the case for the past year with Asuka as champion. For the most part, she has felt like the champion that will just carry the belt before a new superstar comes in and takes it away. For that reason, it looks almost too good to be true that the talented Japanese superstar will head into Mania with the gold around her waist.
WWE News: Could Her Run Still Be Salvaged?
It was confirmed on Raw this past week that Asuka would be taking on Lacey Evans at the upcoming Elimination Chamber event, and that already seems like a match that has just been thrown together. Evans has been involved in a heated rivalry with Flair over the past couple of months, and it isn’t completely unforeseeable that Evans wins to set up a Mania match with Flair with the title on the line.
However, should something change with Asuka over the coming month or so, then we could see her defend the title. A heel turn would be a welcome sight for many, as the WWE Universe knows how unstoppable she could be as a heel. There is a feeling that a heel Asuka against Alexa Bliss could be the match that fans want to see, and it could be the rivalry that saves her current run as champion.
