Apollo Crews has recalled some of his memories from WWE, which included a notable encounter with John Cena, during the early days of his career.

In an interview on the After The Bell Podcast, Apollo stated how John would light-heartedly tease him for not being the biggest name in the sport. He said: “When I first got to the main roster, John Cena was still working and he’d always pull me aside and be like ‘Who is Apollo Crews?
“At the time, I’m like the most generic [wrestler], so embarrassing when I even think about it and it’s like, ‘I’m this guy, I work hard and ….’ and he’s like, ‘Everybody works hard, but who are you?’
But rather than take it to heart, Apollo took it as some words of advice. He spent the next years of his life improving his brand and developing his character. After all, skills only take you so far unless the fans resonate with you. Bill Hogan, for his part, has been criticized for not being charismatic enough. That is what Apollo was seeking to avoid.
He added: “I’m trying to figure out who is Apollo Crews, and I didn’t know. I felt so embarrassed to the point where I’d almost avoid trying to have conversations with him because I know he’s going to ask me again today, and I don’t have an answer for him.
“You got John Cena asking you these questions, and I’m sitting here like I can’t come up [with an answer]. It’s pretty ridiculous. I realized it’s not always about how good you are in the ring. It’s like what drives this person, who are you.”
Those words of advice have proven true even to this day as Apollo has rebranded himself as a member of the Nigerian Royalty in an attempt to bring something unique to the table. Much can be said of the same for John, who has branched out in acting.
Apollo continued: “It’s like we found something [his new character] that’s more than just here’s a guy that smiles and does cool moves, now we have a purpose, now it’s something for people to get behind.”
