Dillian Whyte has made a career of coming back from the brink. However, there were no such pitfalls in his heavyweight rematch with Alexander Povetkin this past weekend, as he looked in complete control from the first bell.
Whyte made the Russian pay for the knockout defeat that he inflicted back in August by inflicting only a second stoppage defeat in the Russian. The victory means that the Brit picked back up the WBC Interim title, and has now set his sights on a major fight later in the year.
Boxing News: Whyte Dismantles Povetkin
There was an air of inevitability on Saturday evening, as the stoppage victory for Whyte just seemed a matter of when, and not if. Povetkin hit the canvas in the opening round of the contest, as Whyte looked to wrap up the victory as early as possible. However, the Russian got back to his feet and threw a few decent punches of his own, as both heavyweights looked for the early stoppage finish.
However, that would be as close as Povetkin got, as Whyte was in control throughout the fight and controlled all rounds with ease. It was possibly the most complete performance that we have seen in the ring by Whyte, and has firmly put him back to the front of the queue for a title opportunity as soon as the opportunity arises.
Boxing News: Big Targets Ahead
The win was finally capped with a blistering end, as Whyte delivered a number of hard shots in the fourth round. It was a sign of Whyte’s improvement that he didn’t look to rush shots despite the Russian being wobbly on his feet. In the event, the left hook that Whyte delivered inside the last minute of the fourth round was the one that completed the job. The referee had no choice but to bring an end to the battle.
The two rivals shook hands after the titanic battle, but Whyte refused to close the door on a third battle with the Russian after the fight. However, there could be another massive fight that could be further up on the agenda, as promoter Eddie Hearn teased that Deontay Wilder could be the next opponent for the mandatory challenger. A potential fight between the heavyweights has been muted for a number of years, but the path now seems clear for the teams to open discussions and make the bout official.
