UFC 259 may only just be in the books, but already the plans for another huge UFC event are being pencilled in. UFC 261 will not be taking place until the end of April, with the event taking place in Las Vegas which was contrary to the original plans that were set in place.
Originally, the event was set to take place in Singapore, but those plans were abandoned due to the COVID pandemic. However, fans will still be set to see a massive night of action.
UFC News: Zhang Weili vs Rose Namajunas Added To The Card
Another exciting bout was added to the card on social media on Monday evening, as it was announced that the women’s Strawweight Championship will be on the line in a battle between Zhang Weili and Rose Namajunas. Weili is currently ranked as the third best female fighter in the pound-for-pound rankings, and is the reigning strawweight champion coming into the fight. She has enjoyed an excellent professional record, as she has won 21 of her 22 fights.
The only defeat that she has suffered came back in November 2013 in her first professional fight against Meng Bo. Most recently, she has beaten Joanna Jedrzejczyk by decision, and Jessica Andrade by TKO. Rose Namajunas will be her opponent at UFC 261, as he looks to add another win to her professional record. She has won nine of her 13 fights to date, and has recently avenged the defeat that she suffered against Jessica Andrade with a split decision victory.
UFC News: Newly Announced Fight Joins Shevchenko/Andrade
Jessica Andrade has fought both women in the bout that was announced on Monday, but she will face a huge challenge herself in the main event at UFC 261 as she will come up against UFC Women’s Flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko. Shevchenko has been in dominant form since winning the championship back in December 2018, as she has successfully defended the gold on four occasions.
Her last defence came in November, as she picked up a unanimous decision victory against Jennifer Maia at UFC 255. Andrade made her flyweight division debut after being beaten in back to back contests against Weili and Namajunas. Her first fight in the new division came in October last year, as she picked up an excellent TKO victory against Kaitlyn Chookagian.
