There was a shock in the main event of UFC 259, as Israel Adesanya was handed a first professional defeat in his fight against Jan Blachowicz. The middleweight champion was looking to join esteemed company by becoming a two-weight world champion, but he fell short of the achieving that against his Polish opponent.

The reigning light heavyweight champion was considered as the outsider by all experts, as they expected Adesanya to have too much for Blachowicz. However, it was another career defining night for the Polish star, as he claimed the points success.

    UFC News: Adesanya Falls Short

Adesanya came out of the blocks quickly in the fight, as he looked to set a furious speed in the contest. However, the longer the fight went, the most control that the Polish champion took. Blachowicz looked very controlled in the final couple of rounds of the fight, as his confidence continued to build, as he knew the fight was getting away from Adesanya.

When the five rounds of action were over, there was little doubt who the winner on the night was, as the Pole was awarded the unanimous decision victory on the scorecards of all three judges. It’s likely that Adesanya will now return to the middleweight division, as he will defend the championship later in the year. However, there would still be shock around the world that his record now stands at 20-1.

UFC News: Nunes Regains Title, Yan Disqualified

There were two other title fights on the UFC 259 card, as Amanda Nunes came up against Megan Anderson in the co-main event. Nunes produced a dominant display in the fight, as she made Anderson submit in the first round after locking in the triangle armbar. Nunes was pleased with her performance afterwards, and warned the division that she has never been more dangerous than she is at this moment in time.

There was a massive upset in the fight before Nunes entered the Octagon, as Petr Yan was disqualified after striking Aljamain Sterling with an illegal knee. It was a sour end to their fight, as neither fighter was happy with the outcome. Sterling was given the title after the decision by the referee, but he knew that he was behind on the scorecards of all judges at the point the decision was made. Yan admitted soon after the fight that he was sorry for his illegal move, and vowed to get revenge.
