At WWE Elimination Chamber, Daniel Bryan overcame five of Smackdown’s best to earn a shot at the WWE Universal Championship. This would come directly after the chamber match, and leave Bryan all but defenseless against Roman Reigns. However, now he’s got a proper chance to be champion going into Wrestlemania, and facing Edge.
He defeated Jey Uso in a Steel Cage match to earn a chance to face Reigns tonight, and Edge beat Uso to become the guest enforcer tonight. Bryan knows he can beat Reigns, he just needs to do it. Reigns just needs to avoid the submissions.
Daniel Bryan Toys With The Champion
Bryan wasn’t intimidated by Reigns, and would look to take Reigns down early with a single leg. He’d almost catch Reigns, before being driven into the corner. Bryan slipped out, and they’d lock up in the ring, and Reigns outpowered him with ease and hit a cheap shot in the corner.
Reigns would have his ankle picked for the heel hook, and scurried to the ropes in a panic. Bryan would ask if Reigns needed a break, before going for the heel hook again, but Reigns got to the ropes again. Reigns applied a Greco Roman Knuckle Lock, and countered into an armbar. Bryan hasn’t done any physical damage yet, but he’s shown Reigns that he can keep coming with submissions.
He’d toy with Reigns with some weak strikes before kicking the legs hard. Reigns got his hands on Bryan and yanked him to the mat with a headlock takeover. But Bryan slipped out and applied a shoulder lock, before stomping the arm down to try for a pinfall. Reigns stomped his way out, and hit a straight right hand to the head.
Bryan would be picked up and driven into the corner, but came back with a dropkick to the jaw. He’d grab wrist control and hit an armbreaker, toss in some kicks, before trying to find a rhythm. Reigns attacked the eyes to get free, and Bryan nailed him with kicks in the corner, before running into a tilt-a-whirl slam.
Bryan was down and Reigns would slow this one down, hitting a powerful suplex but Bryan kicked out at one. Reigns would have his leg grabbed by Bryan, but wouldn’t even be near taken down. He’d stomp Bryan down, before settling into a rear chinlock while staring Edge down at ringside.
Roman Reigns Takes Control
Bryan fought his way out with some back elbows, before being sent over the top rope to the apron. A throat thrust sent Bryan to the floor, and Reigns took some time to talk trash with Edge before throwing Bryan into the barricade. He could have taken the countout, but Reigns wanted to keep the punishment coming so he threw Bryan around on the outside and sent him back into the ring.
Bryan was hit with a larat in the corner, and Reigns would send him across the ring. He’d be hit with a drop toehold into the corner, before Bryan started hitting some kicks. The running dropkick nailed Reigns, before Bryan went for a top rope hurricanrana. Reigns blocked this and pulled Bryan down into the ring for a Boston Crab. Bryan countered out into a pinfall, getting a two count. They’d slug it out in the middle of the ring, Reigns taking a kick to the face before being sent over the top rope.
Bryan dove over the top rope and Reigns caught him with a powerslam. Another slam was countered by Reigns getting shoved into the post. Bryan hit a diving knee strike off the apron, before sending Reigns into the ring. Another diving knee strike got the arm of Reigns, before he’d go up top again for a dropkick.
Bryan kept the pressure coming with the Yes! Kicks, but Reigns blocked the big roundhouse. He’d uncork a huge right hand, before nailing some knee strikes in the corner. Bryan kicked Reigns in the shoulder, and tried a double leg but Reigns stopped him and looked for a powerbomb. This was countered into a hurricanrana, and Bryan hit a roundhouse kick to the head for a two count.
Edge Takes Over As Referee As Chaos Erupts
Bryan would grab the arms of Reigns and looked to stomp the head in, before he’d apply the Yes! Lock. Reigns was close to the ropes, and when he reached out, Bryan rolled them smoothly back into the middle of the ring. Bryan would just keep yanking back, and Reigns grit was being put to the test.
Reigns broke the grasp of the fingers before slamming Bryan with some clubbing blows and breaking the hold fully with a powerbomb. They’d struggle to their feet, and Bryan blocked a spear with a knee to the face. He ran in with a running knee, but took the referee out. Edge took over as the referee, serving his role, as Reigns nailed the spear on Bryan, getting a two count by the time Edge got in.
Reigns questioned the count, and went back to some clubbing blows and ended up in the Triangle Choke by Bryan. Bryan was lifted up, and moved into the Yes! Lock once again in the middle of the ring. Some crossface blows would be mixed in by Bryan, and Jey Uso ran into the match and hit Edge & Bryan with superkicks before grabbing a steel chair.
Edge was thrown into the post, but Uso was hit with the running knee by Bryan. He’d take the chair to the back of Uso, Paul Heyman looking on in horror. Bryan pondered using the chair on Reigns, and got Edge instead before Reigns hit a superman punch.
Reigns went for the Spear and ended up in the Yes! Lock a third time, and was fading. Bryan forced Reigns to tap out, but Edge hit Bryan and Reigns both with the chair instead of calling it. Edge stormed off and left both men beaten down, as a referee came to the ring. Reigns crawled into the pin to win.
This was the textbook WWE main event done to perfect. Daniel Bryan didn’t play the underdog, but rather the confident grappler, while Roman Reigns played the cocky heavyweight champion. They kept it simple and coherent in the ring, with Bryan wearing Reigns down with submissions, and Reigns focusing on power moves. A spotfest this was not, but they kept the tension tight and drama high. At the end, things broke down in usual fashion for WWE, but set up a bigger match for Wrestlemania. Match Rating: 4.5/5 (**** ½)
