Right now on WWE Friday Night Smackdown, Apollo Crews is looking to defeat Big E and add the WWE Intercontinental Championship to his legacy. He’s failed many times so far, before changing his attitude and rekindling his roots as a descendent of Nigerian Royalty. Crews has been running this character for a few weeks now, and it’s helped him stand out on the packed roster.
Apollo Crews New Accent Came Out Of Nowhere Like An RKO
However, while everyone accepts this change of character, the sudden appearance of a new accent for Crews still has some scratching their heads. After years of speaking with a more American accent, Apollo Crews suddenly swapped to a Nigerian accent for this character. The accent came out of nowhere, and while it has been explained as a way for Crews to play up his newfound appreciation for his ancestors, it was a jarring change.
Most immigrants to places like the United States will often mask their accents, to the point where the American accent takes over. Crews has spoken with an American accent for years, even in shoot interviews where he’d have been able to use his Nigerian accent without issue.
This fake accent has drawn some comparisons to when Kofi Kingston used a fake Jamaican accent in WWE, something which WWE made reference to in recent years with the rap battle between The New Day & The Usos, as well as their time machine segment from a few years back. Atleast in the current case of Apollo Crews, he is of Nigerian heritage, while Kofi Kingston is not Jamaican at all, being from Ghana in West Africa.
WWE Just Needs To Stick With This Idea
While this fake accent is jarring, WWE fans will generally accept change over time. New names and gimmicks take time to simmer, and if WWE sticks with Apollo Crews and his new accent, it will become natural in time. If rebrandings like Erik & Ivar of The Viking Raiders can catch on, so can this new accent of Apollo Crews.
It certainly helps him stand out and gives a unique feel to his promos, which makes it a huge benefit to Crews. Even when he was United States Champion in 2020, he had a rough time standing out, so this accent shift is a major help for sure. WWE has a history of being a bit flakey when it comes to ideas, and we can only hope they give Apollo Crews this chance to shine.
Do you think WWE will give fans time to adjust to Crews and his Nigerian accent? Will it be dropped after Wrestlemania and this feud with Big E? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
