The A&E documentary series of former WWE Superstars has been a hit with fans and critics, but the Randy Savage documentary has drawn its share of legitimate criticism, with the latest being from Lanny Poffo, “Macho Man” Randy Savage’s brother.
Yep, as many may know from social media, the Randy Savage documentary a few weeks back drew the ire of fans and those in the business for parts of their reporting on Randy Savage stories.
One of those critical of the episode was Erick Bischoff, who was in charge of WCW when Randy was there.
Wrestlinginc.com reported Bischoff saying:
“I’m embarrassed that I was a part of that as well,” Bischoff said. “So people understand and know, both me [and my wife] shot those segments while I was still working for WWE and both of us were still living in Stamford a year and a half ago. I’ve been involved in so many WWE projects, and I hope to continue to be involved.
“Had I known what this biography was going to be, neither my wife nor I would have participated. Had I known that they were going to put Bubba the f***ing Love Sponge in this thing, I would’ve said thank you but no thank you. I’m embarrassed too [to be involved in it] by the way.
“For people to understand why I went off the way I did on the Randy Savage A&E documentary, I just felt like there was a lot of dirt for the sake of dirt. Sensationalism for the sake of sensationalism.”
While many like Bischoff shared their feeling for the documentary, Lanny Poffo had to wait to see it as he lives in Ecuador and then he said he was going to tweet, but felt he couldn’t fully explain himself in 128 characters.
Facts from Lanny
He chose to use prowrestlingstories.com to share his views, and they can be read in detail here.
He covered and fact checked several topics like whether or not Randy locked Elizabeth in a closet, and questioned why so many that failed at marriages felt it was their place to offer advice on the topic.
He put his overall feeling into an interesting equation.
“75% of the A&E Biography episode on Randy Savage was great, 20% was lousy, and 5% was horrible.” – Lanny Poffo
According to him (quoting from the above linked article): “The people responsible for the 5% are Stephanie Bellars (Gorgeous George, Frankenstein, whatever) and Bubba the Love Sponge.
“These are two people that speak with authority with absolutely no validity. Bubba, for instance, speculated on who Randy loved all his life, yet he wasn’t even on Randy’s Christmas list, so how was he going to know that?”
He also explained how he refused to write a song badmouthing Hulk Hogan as Hogan had given him four months of main events after being on the scrap heap.
The article is a must read and brings to light some of the shortcomings of the documentary by providing some of the real story behind the man, including his rarely if ever talked about contributions to various groups like the Special Olympics.
