Last night, we saw a unique episode of Smackdown Live. It was the first to ever feature a Hell in A Cell match, as Roman Reigns defended the WWE Universal Championship against the legendary Rey Mysterio. However, there was something else interesting about Smackdown this week and that was who was backstage, and who wrestled in some dark matches. Two singles champions from NXT were on hand, as NXT Champion Karrion Kross along with his manager Scarlett & NXT North American Champion Bronson Reed were seen backstage.
Potential Call Ups In The Next WWE Draft?
With rumors of a coming WWE Draft for RAW & Smackdown coming, this is interesting. Reed & Kross are great talents, and both are suited to the main roster style. Both are powerhouses, with Reed being more agile while Kross is better with his character work. Getting a chance to work a dark match generally means someone has the direct attention of Vince McMahon, or other higher ups who are in charge of deciding who leaves NXT.
This is a smart idea. It allows the people in charge or RAW or Smackdown to have a first hand example of what these wrestlers can do, and could help to avoid dead in the water call ups, which we’ve seen many times with a few examples being EC3, Eric Young, Alexander Wolfe, Killian Dain, Forgotten Sons, and more.
The only in that list to still be in the company is Dain, who has since returned to NXT. If it takes a few weeks of dark matches before Vince & Co have a good idea of how to use them, and that means we get call ups who get better initial plans? That’s a major win for fans and talent alike. The dark matches were Karrion Kross vs. Dolph Ziggler, and Bronson Reed vs. Robert Roode.
Who Could They Drop Their Belts To?
If their fate is to be called up to RAW or Smackdown, there is the issue of their current championship reigns. Right now, Bronson Reed is an easy one. He’s in a feud with the super popular Santos Escobar, with them clashing as part of a six man “winner takes all” match at NXT Takeover, where Escobar had Reed beat on one occasion when he nailed a driver in the middle of the ring. Escobar wants a one on one title match, and generally when a title match is wanted in NXT, it will find a way to happen.
Kross is a bit harder. He just punched a hole through the Mount Rushmore of NXT, when he defended the NXT Championship against Adam Cole, Pete Dunne, Johnny Gargano and Kyle O’Reilly. That takes most of his top contenders out, and there are few left with a reasonable claim on who can beat him. Pete Dunne came closest in the match and didn’t take the fall, but the more likely option is Samoa Joe. Joe is the new enforcer of William Regal, and if provoked he can get physical. Given how much Kross has been a thorn in the side of Regal? Joe will likely get his chance soon.
