“It’s crazy to say that we used to be each other’s main training partners back in the day. I always knew this guy was special and I’m not surprised he has the belt around his waist. Congratulations Brandon Moreno on becoming the first UFC champion from Mexico. PS. You know what my favorite color is Brenda, keep your hands up ?????? #CejudoQueSi”
Moreno’s journey to gold has been an incredible one. In season 24 of ‘The Ultimate Fiighter’. Moreno was the last seed and ended up on Joseph Benavidez’s team after Cejudo chose Alexandre Pantoja as his first pick, as neither coach knew the fighters’ positions before. Cejudo was visibly upset at the coincidence of having to coach against his former training partner. In fact, he refused to help Pantoja plan strategy in the run-up to the fight out of respect for his friend.
Moreno was knocked out by Pantoja in the first round, but that allowed him to take a fight while the show was still going on. The Mexican had a 3-2 record in his first UFC stint, but was released by the promotion. Since returning to the octagon, Moreno is undefeated in seven fights. He crowned his comeback by dethroning Figueiredo in his second attempt after a majority draw in their first fight at UFC 256.
