Former UFC strawweight champion Weili Zhang is already getting back to work planning her return to action.
The Chinese-born Zhang suffered a loss to Rose Namajunas at UFC 261 in April. She recently took to Instagram to hint at a possible rematch on the horizon as she begins training for her next fight.
Weili Zhang starts preparing for her next fight…against Namajunas?
“After a period of rest. I started training for my next fight. Rose is very strong. She is a real ace. I need to work harder and I think our second fight will be a very good fight. Playing against the best is something I have always enjoyed doing. That’s what folks want to see as well.”
Weili won the 115-pound crown in August 2019 with a 42-second technical knockout of Jessica Andrade. The win made history when Zhang became the first UFC champion from her home country.
To follow up the incredible win, ‘Magnum’ went from capturing gold at home to U.S. soil. Standing in her way for the first defense was none other than the division’s all-time best, Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
Zhang and Joanna fought in the best consensus fight of 2020. A split decision gave Zhang the victory.

“Everything will continue,” Zhang posted with another training video. “I started to prepare for the battle. I hope to make a little progress every day.”
While Weili seems optimistic about a rematch, she could have competition. Carla Esparza has continued her winning ways and is arguably showing the best version of herself. By defeating Yan Xiaonan at UFC Vegas 27, the inaugural UFC champion in Esparza extended her winning streak to five. Therefore, she is certainly in line for a title shot in the eyes of many.
However, it has yet to be confirmed whether Weili or Esparza will be Namajunas’ next opponent.
