There’s been plenty of rumors floating around recently about Roman Reigns and John Cena as a potential opponent since there’s few left on the Smackdown roster he hasn’t cheated against.
But there could be some new information from Dave Meltzer at the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
According to Meltzer, the plan is to have John Cena come back to face Roman Reigns at SummerSlam, though the WWE hasn’t announced anything yet so we’re taking this with a grain of salt.
With recent rumors of Cena wanting to work with the WWE again floating around, this makes sense. And since they faced once before, this could be the second match of a best of three series.
The Cena factor
John Cena’s popularity can’t be questioned, and since we assume he can still wrestle at a high level it makes sense for him to come back for one more run.
It also speaks to the lack of star power the current roster has, but that’s another topic.
This could be the beginning of a passing the torch moment between Cena and Reigns, as there’s no doubt in Vince McMahon’s belief that Reigns is one of the best ever and this would give him a huge boost.
It’ll also continue the current trend of the WWE appearing to enter the era of live crowds again with one of the best cards and headliners they can come up with.
And when Reigns wins, he’ll continue ruling Smackdown with an iron fist and have a match against Goldberg possibly at the Royal Rumble, and then onto WrestleMania to face the Rock.
Things change
While this rumor is fun and will give fans hope that Reigns will finally lose, it hasn’t been confirmed and could change at any time.
Anything from an injury to simply a change of mind could alter this idea, so we’ll wait and see.
A lot of fans don’t like how Cesaro’s feud with Reigns ended after one match so that’s a possibility, and many others would love to see Reigns and Seth Rollins go after each other.
With so many moving pieces, including the Usos possibly creating a civil war within the Tribal Chief’s family, things could get interesting.
Still, it’s something we’re curious to see. Will John Cena give us another match or has he wrestled his last? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
