The idea of the WWE retiring the women’s tag team championship isn’t anything new as fans have been lukewarm on it since the title was created.
Of course, had they simply reactivated the old women’ tag championship things would’ve gone smoother, or if they’d bothered to try to build the women’s tag division at all.
Over the last year or two, the WWE has systematically dismantled the numerous women’s tag teams they had to create singles matchups.
It’s the same thing they’ve done to the men’s division for years, and is a huge reason why a couple of teams have close to or do have double digit championship runs compared to the greatest teams of yesteryear have two or three.
It’s not the wrestlers’ fault, but the system that’s putting them in this position and it’s looking like the WWE would be better off eliminated the women’s tag team championship.
Thinning roster
By releasing Ruby Riott and Lana, the WWE dismantled two more teams, The Riott Squad and The Glow.
And with Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax on the verge of feuding over Reginald it looks like we’re down to two team tag team division consisting of Mandy Rose and Dana Brooke, and Tamina and Natalya.
It’s not a good look under any circumstances, but especially when we look back at the other teams that were broken up for this reason or that.
The list includes The IIconics (Peyton Royce, Billie Kay), the Kabuki Warriors (Asuka, Kairi Saine), Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross, The Glow (Lana, Naomi), The Riott Squad (Ruby Riott, Liv Morgan), Sasha Banks and Bayley, and Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax.
Sure, a couple of them could reunite, but we don’t think that’s going to happen the way things appear to be going.
But maybe getting rid of the tag titles isn’t the answer.
Unify the championships under one brand
We mentioned this previously and it looks like this is still the best option.
It would also allow them to unify the two women’s championships under one banner. If they don’t want to create a separate brand, then the championships can still be unified and the champions would float.
It’d be like when the WWE unified the WWF and WCW World Heavyweight Championships and the champion floated between the brands.
We’d also like to see the men’s championships unified as well.
Sure, it would cut down on belt merchandise sales, but it’d ensure the more popular and deserving draw would be champion for either brand and it could lead to an increase in other merchandise sales to balance it out.
There are simply too many championships in the WWE and there’s no prestige from a fan’s perspective anymore, and this presents a interesting problem.
What do you think? Should the women’s tag team championship be retired or should the women’s titles in general be unified and under their own brand? Let us know in the comments below.
