The WWE has a number of television shows that were canceled for a variety of reasons. Let’s look at five WWE shows that were that you’ll probably remember.
WWE Saturday Morning Slam
I always felt the Saturday morning block was perfect for wrestling but WWE took the “cater to kids” approach and ran with it. Rated TV-G, WWE Slam removed strikes and drops to the head and neck.
The result was a very bland, unexciting product and a show that wasn’t even around for a while year. Apparently, WWE and Saban—yes, Power Rangers-Saban—couldn’t agree on the creative direction of the show.
Where could they have gone with WWE Slam is anyone’s guess.
WWF Mania
Keeping with the Saturday morning grind, WWF Mania was a recap show that featured an exclusive match. Not only that but fans could call in. It ran from 1993 until 1995 and was basically WWF LiveWire before that show debuted.
This is an interesting show because it was just phased out instead of failing and being cut.
WWF Super Astros
Another show that was discontinued was WWF Super Astros. This show ran in markets with heavy Latino demographics and featured luchadors. If you remember Max Mini and other luchadors who were in WWF in the early 90s, Super Astros is the main reason they were there.
The best way to explain it is as 1993 RAW with luchadors as the main in-ring talent.
WWE Slam City
The second WWE cartoon was the one that wasn’t going to last. WWE Slam City was mixed in with NickToons as two-minute shorts. Personally, I liked Slam City and it probably should’ve just been a show on The Network with lengthier episodes.
ECW
The revival of Extreme Championship Wrestling as a WWE brand was interesting at first. WWE brought in some originals, mixed them with their own superstars, and made this very makeshift brand that obviously wasn’t on the same level as RAW and SmackDown.
ECW became must-skip TV very early on but was around longer than I expected it to be. This show was bound to fail because the ECW concept was over and done in the early 2000s.
As for ECW, very little of note came out of it outside of some exciting matches early on and title reigns for guys that the company was stalling to put in the World title picture.
