The WWE has long drawn from other sports whether in a brief role like guest ring announcer, referee, or other function, but Paige VanZant is looking to follow another well traveled route to in ring competition.
It’s not a surprise as she’s young and extremely athletic and tough, though the latter is often overlooked when it comes to professional wrestlers.
They may not be taking real punches, kicks, and submission moves, but they’re taxing their bodies every match and risking injury or worse simply to entertain us like stuntpeople turned actors.
As for VanZant, she went from MMA to Bare Knuckle Fighting, but that doesn’t mean she won’t follow other MMA fighters like Ronda Rousey, Shayna Baszler, and Sonya Deville into the square circle.
In fact, she talked with popculture.com about coming to the WWE and when the time would be right.
The right time
Special thanks to popculture.com for the transcript.
“I am a fan, and I do follow them. Obviously, the door is open there. I love the idea of competing and being a part of their organization because they are so amazing. But I feel like the commitment there, it’s a full-time job with the athletes for the WWE.
“What they do is extremely amazing. It’s pure talent. But I feel like it’s a full-time job. You can’t be half in, half out. And right now, I do have to be in BKFC and combat sports. So I feel like eventually in my career, I feel like the opportunity will definitely still be there. And I feel like there’s interest on both sides, so maybe later down the road. But right now, I am focused on just bare-knuckle boxing.”
The WWE is known for one of if not the most grueling road schedule of roughly 300 days a year. Constantly on the go from city to city, state to state can take its toll on a person and add tons of stress.
Though the WWE has said they’re stopping house shows, they’re going to tour for their shows, Raw and Smackdown and the exact number of those aren’t known as they’re building their calendar after a year working from Florida.
We have no doubt VanZant would be a great asset to WWE’s women’s division, and there’s always the possibility of her facing Ronda Rousey if she returns or anyone else.
In the interview, she stated she’s not aware of how it works behind the scenes at WWE, but she’d be open to discussing whatever plans they’d have for her.
Until then, we wish her the best with her Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship career and hope to see her in a WWE ring at some point.
