On night one of Wrestlemania 37, we would see the first ever women’s singles match in the main event. Sasha Banks & Bianca Belair stole the show with an incredible match which many rank among the best matches in Wrestlemania history. Add in the history of being the first two black women to main event Wrestlemania, and it’s not shocking to hear the exciting news that they are now winners of ESPY awards.
ESPY Awards Celebrate Sport Performances, Which Includes WWE Since 2019
Since 1993, the ESPY awards have been used to celebrate the top athletes in America. It had mainly focused on sports like Hockey, Baseball, and especially Basketball, but back in 2019 WWE would be added as a category with “Best WWE Moment” which is noted as being for the “the WWE Superstar who had the greatest stand out or feel good moment during WWE’s calendar year.”
The only other winner is Roman Reigns for his return to action following a battle with leukemia in 2019. Becky Lynch winning the RAW & Smackdown Women’s Championships, Kofi Kingston for winning WWE Championship, and Ronda Rousey for winning RAW Women’s Championship. 2020 was hardly a good year for award ceremonies, but Titus O’Neil was nominated for the Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award. He’d lose in the category to Nelson Cruz of MLB team Minnesota Twins.
Bianca Belair & Sasha Banks Win The 2021 Best WWE Moment ESPY
The field was fairly stacked, but Bianca Belair had two horses in this race. She was up for his long Royal Rumble run, and the Wrestlemania main event. Edge was up for his victory in the 2021 Men’s Royal Rumble and becoming the third man to win from the Number One spot. Finally, the match from Wrestlemania 37 which saw international recording star Bad Bunny team with Damien Priest to defeat The Miz & John Morrison.
In the end, Sasha Banks & Bianca Belair would win for the reasoning of “becoming the first Black women to battle in a WrestleMania main event”. They would accept the awards looking great, with Belair quick to point out on Twitter that she made her own dress for the event. Belair of course makes all her own ring gear as well.
Will Bianca Belair be nominated next year for another ESPY? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
