Ciryl Gane is undefeated in MMA, and is one of the most technical strikers in the heavyweight division. The Frenchman has bad news for fans of Derrick “The Black Beast” Lewis: he won’t Lewis even land a glove on him.
At least, that’s the plan, according to an interview with MMA Junkie: “This guy is really dangerous with his fists.
Gane on Lewis: “He’s not going to touch me!”
So the plan is make pressure, touch him, but he’s not going to touch me. I think it’s going to be my game plan like every fight: touch the guy and never get touched.
I touch him and he never touches me. Something like that. And if it’s possible, finish the fight before the end. I’m going to try.”
Gane’s impressive 9-0 MMA record displays a variety of wins, with equal numbers of submissions, knockouts, and decision wins. For his most recent fights in the UFC, Gane ground out highly technical decision wins over his opponents, preferring low-risk striking masterclasses to the highlight-reel knockouts we’re used to seeing from the UFC’s heavyweights.
That’s not to say Gane doesn’t have what it takes to finish his opponents. Of his six UFC fights – all of them wins – Gane has three stoppage wins. One of these was a TKO via a brutal elbow, which earned him a victory over Junior Dos Santos. His other two UFC finishes came from submissions.
Gane has two submission wins in the UFC heavyweight division, a heel hook and an arm triangle. Submission victories are rarer in the higher weight classes. Fighters at 260 pounds tend to have sufficient strength to escape most Jiu-Jitsu holds, or to prevent their opponent from advancing a grappling position. Derrick Lewis in particular is notorious for simply standing up when he finds himself in a compromising position on the ground.
Derrick Lewis, on the other hand, is on a four-fight win streak since 2019, returning to winning ways after consecutive losses to Daniel Cormier and Junior Dos Santos. boasts twenty knockout victories in 25 wins.
Lewis is a notorious knockout artist, dispatching Curtis Blaydes, Marcin Tybura, and Alexander Volkov with his fists. Gane’s plan – hit the other guy and don’t let him him you – might be enough to avoid Lewis’ strikes. All it takes from such a powerful striker is a single blow in the right spot to end the fight.
Do you see Gane defeating Lewis and taking the heavyweight interim title? Will Derrick Lewis go on to challenge Ngannou for the undisputed belt? Let us know in the comments.
