In his time with WWE, Matt Riddle had a good run which saw him win the U.S and Raw Tag Team titles—with Randy Orton. The issue with many fans when it comes to Riddle’s run is a combination of the potential he had within WWE’s system and the company’s booking. However, for those within the company, Riddle was viewed as a persistent problem.
Where Does Matt Riddle Go Post-WWE?
Among those issues were the publicized accusations, drug use, claims, and Riddle not keeping to the script at times. It was too much for WWE to justify keeping him around. It’s not unusual for the company—or any promotion—to deal with a persistent problem but after 90s and combinations of drug and alcohol abuse and egos, nipping it in the bud is the right course of action. Plus, WWE tends to give enough chances for a superstar to get it together and even covers some services to help.
In the case of Matt Riddle, you could say there’s the added element of time. He was in WWE for five years and on the main roster since mid-2020. That’s three years of the main roster staff running into issues with Riddle—which is a short amount of time in WWE. Normally, you’d hear about superstars getting released after 8-10 years in the system and—if you’re like me—you might be shocked that they were that long.
However, it’s very rare to hear about a variety of issues with most superstars. Despite whatever notoriety Matt Riddle has, his WWE run has made him a hotter talent in wrestling but according to The Wrestling Observer Newsletter’s Dave Meltzer, there are interested MMA promotions as well:
“Most pro wrestling companies of any size immediately expressed interest, and in MMA, both PFL and Bare Knuckle Fighting had expressed interest due to his name value from WWE and the fact he was a decent MMA fighter.”
Meltzer also pointed out that Riddle hasn’t fought in close to a decade and that it might not be the best idea to entertain MMA offers. We’ll have to see what happens with Riddle in less than three months once his non-compete clause is done but where do you see Riddle landing?
