When Io Shirai lost the NXT Women’s Championship to Raquel Gonzalez, everybody assumed she was set to move to either RAW or SmackDown. Instead, Shirai took some time off and found a new focus in WWE NXT. As the NXT Women’s Tag Team division grows, Shirai wants to help it grow alongside her current partner Zoey Stark, as said in a recent interview with Tokyo Sports.
Io Shirai Wants To Boost The NXT Women’s Tag Team Championships
During an interview with the previously meant Tokyo Sports, Shirai would be asked about her current role in NXT. Translating the interview brought the following quote:
“It’s been more than a year and a half since NXT started broadcasting on TV. Being the first to enter the show, I’m the first person to step into the show’s television history. After that, I played a big role in leveling up the women’s competition, and after becoming the champion, I raised the value of the title and the evaluation of our show. I want to become the tag champion and continue to raise its value.”
Shirai would also comment on her partner, Zoey Stark. “I haven’t fully figured out her personality yet, but watching her match, she’s very athletic. I think she is a highly mobile competitor who can fly and is also good at basics. She can do things that I can’t do, so I respect her honestly. I think we can expect a synergistic effect by assembling.”
Too Many Frequent Title Changes?
Despite only having been brought into the mix earlier this year, we are already on our third set of NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions. The first champions were Raquel Gonzalez & Dakota Kai, who were awarded the belts following winning the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic and being screwed over by Adam Pearce during their match with Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler.
They lost the belts the same day they won them to Ember Moon & Shotzi Blackheart. Moon & Blackheart managed a few defenses before losing to Candice LeRae & Indi Hartwell in a street fight. The division has been chaotic, and while that makes for fun and intense programming, however they could risk the belt lacking prestige due to so many rapid title changes. NXT generally builds their titles off long and well fought reigns, making these titles currently stand out.
Would it be a good move to have Io Shirai & Zoey Stark win the NXT Women’s Tag Team Championships on Tuesday at Great American Bash? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
