Conor McGregor spent the better part of the last week issuing canned trash talk about Dustin Poirier and his wife Jolie. Particularly galling were the “your husband’s your wife!” shouts and McGregor’s unverified screenshot of a DM request from Poirier’s longtime sweetheart.
As Conor screamed into Joe Rogan’s interview microphone, flecks of spittle flying from his irate mouth, he yet again insulted Poirier’s wife. With a sneering invite to his afterparty in Vegas, Conor tried to get at least one parting shot in before being carried from the arena on a stretcher.
“Thug Wife” Jolie Poirier STANDS UP to McGregor’s trash talk
While there’s been no word on Conor’s longtime partner Dee Devlin’s position on the matter, Jolie herself made her feelings clear.
Michael Chiesa shared the above photo of Jolie Poirier flipping McGregor the bird, labelling her “thug wife” on Twitter. Jolie wasn’t exactly unprovoked, with Dustin elaborating on McGregor’s antics in a post-fight interview:
“I hope they show the behind-the-scenes stuff. He was sitting on the ground still saying, ‘I’m going to kill you.’ Putting his finger to his head like a gun. Like bro, chill out. Chill out. He was saying that.”
Dustin admitted that his wife hadn’t had an easy time leading into the fight, even beyond the jitters one would expect watching their husband risk life and limb in the Octagon.
“She was getting worked up, just with the stuff around the charity. But I’ve been in the spotlight a long time, been fighting UFC, great performances mostly, a couple ones that didn’t go my way. And I just know the fire that comes down with that stuff so I’m more equipped to handle that hate.
She’s not, so when the charity stuff started going with Conor and a lot of hate was being thrown, she was feeling it because she’s so involved with the charity. So it started bringing her down. And then with Conor pulling all this other stuff he did, it was working her up more than it was me.
I don’t like to see that. I don’t want anyone around me to have to go through that. But, it’s whatever, man, it’s social media stuff. It’s not real.”
Poirier emerged from the trilogy bout clearly the more level-headed of the two. While Conor McGregor recovers from his broken leg, Dustin will challenge Charles Oliveira for the lightweight title.
Maybe, as the UFC strides into the third decade of the 21st century, we’re seeing a new era of combat sports where mutual respect and humility overcome trash talk and spectacle. Maybe Conor McGregor has simply exhausted his goodwill with the UFC.
