Georges St-Pierre (GSP) is universally considered to be one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time. Many consider him to be the greatest of all time. So when he weighs in on who among the UFC’s current roster might be the most dangerous fighter on the planet, fans ought to listen.
St-Pierre told Bleacher Report about who he likes in the modern UFC, and revealed his pick for the best in the promotion. “I think Usman, right now, is the best pound-for-pound. In terms of performance, I think he’s one of the best right now and he’s an active competitor.”
This is who Georges St-Pierre think is the #1 fighter on the planet…
The UFC’s official rankings still has Jon Jones at the top, despite his inactivity and public spats with Dana White. Jon Jones was the light heavyweight champion, and dominated the division for years despite several public controversies.
These included drug issues and a car crash involving a pregnant woman. Interestingly, St-Pierre does not name Jones on his list of favorite fighters. Instead, he prefers the UFC’s active champions:
“I like to watch Adesanya as well, Francis Ngannou, Ciryl Gane. I like Volkanovski. All of the champions!
If we’re talking about who’s the greatest, I think Moreno is pretty amazing. The way he beat Figueiredo, that was amazing. It was an amazing performance. As good as it gets.”
St-Pierre is full of praise for the current crop of UFC champions. His last fight in the promotion was a powerful submission win over Michael Bisping, who moved on to UFC commentary since. GSP has been anything but unoccupied in his time outside of the Octagon, sharing his opinions and comments with as many online outlets as possible and moonlighting as an actor in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe.
The 40-year-old is unlikely to return to action, although he has expressed interest in a potential superfight against the more recently-retired Khabib Nurmagomedov.
GSP’s reign as Welterweight champion lasted five years, and included nine consecutive title defences. This remains the most consecutive title defences in history. Usman looks to be cementing a similar reputation, with four consecutive title defences since claiming the Welterweight championship at UFC 235 in 2019. Since this victory over Tyron Woodley, Usman vastly improved his striking, accumulating three KO/TKO victories in his four defences. Few contenders look even close to the “Nigerian Nightmare” in terms of fighting ability.
Who do you think is the best fighter in the world at the moment? Do you agree with GSP, or do you have another opinion? Let us know in the comments.
