This past week was a big one for AEW World Heavyweight Champion Kenny Omega. He was able to defeat Jungle Boy in a hard fought championship match on a Saturday Night Dynamite, and the following Wednesday he would cut one of his better recent promos after being confronted by Evil Uno & The Dark Order. However, what most people have been talking about is his new facial hair look. He kept the moustache and shaved his chin, a look which had many scratching their heads, but it’s actually a reference to a wrestling legend.
No, Kenny Omega Was Not Inspired By Triple H
The first name most people thought of when they saw the new facial hair look was Triple H. He had a similar moustache look at one stage of his career, when he was looking like he just came off steroids and stole Lemmy’s facial hair. However, this is not where Kenny Omega got his inspiration from.
Instead, he’d confirm on Twitter it was actually inspired by Harley Race. He was asked by a fan if it was a reference to the former NWA Champion, and Omega responded with the following. “Ding ding ding! Tbh, HHH never crossed my mind. Totally forgot about that phase in his career.”
Omega Worked With Harley Race As A Rookie
While it feels like a leap from Kenny Omega to Harley Race, any professional wrestler can and should find some inspiration from Race. However, Omega spent some time at a Harley Race training camp, where wrestlers were motivated by a spot in the Pro Wrestling NOAH dojo or WWE Developmental System, which at the time was Deep South Wrestling.
Race actually disliked Omega, but Johnny Ace who was helping out was able to get along with Omega, and brought him into Deep South Wrestling. This wouldn’t work out in the end, and Omega would make his way to Japan and into the DDT Dojo. This would get his foot into the door of NJPW alongside Kota Ibushi, and the rest is history.
