It’s time to get started with the 2021 NXT Breakout Tournament! Like last time, it’s under single elimination rules, and tonight the field of eight will start to shrink. The first match will see Duke Hudson take on 205 Live fan favorite Ikeman Jiro. Hudson was previously known as Brendan Vink, and teamed with Shane Thorne on Monday Night RAW, but is now back to solo action and looking to truly make his name. Ikeman Jiro is a long shot in this tournament, but is also someone to not overlook, as he’s proven to be deadly and unpredictable.
Duke Hudson Shows That Power Goes A Long Way
Wade Barrett would quickly attach himself to Hudson, saying he reminds himself of him earlier in his career. Ikeman would hit the ring with a big crowd reaction, but Hudson showed his power quickly as he threw him down into the mat. Hudson was too powerful for Ikeman, so instead Ikeman would dodge around the ring.
Ikeman grabbed a jacket assisted headlock before doing a handstand in the corner and clicking his heels. He’d pop over Hudson, before being caught on his shoulders and kicked in the face. Ikeman was thrown onto the top rope, before Hudson nailed a big running chop. A major scoop slam dropped Ikeman, who came back with some quick shotei palm strikes.
He’d apply the Tarantula, a signature move of his trainer Tajiri. However, he’d only get four seconds on that hold. A springboard attempt would end with Ikeman getting caught with a belly to belly suplex, before Hudson nailed a major uppercut. Hudson looked for the Razors Edge, before Ikeman countered into a last second hurricanrana.
A blockbuster off the middle rope would send Hudson to the floor, where Ikeman hit a springboard moonsault onto him. Back in the ring, Hudson was nailed with a superkick, before he’d catch Ikeman with a swinging Bossman Slam for the win. Barrett would point out he used the same finisher, calling it the Winds of Change, and it was a big win all the same.
A solid start to the tournament, as we’d see an impressive clash of styles. Ikeman Jiro had some excellent hope spots, but in the end the size and power of Hudson was far too much. Nothing impressive, but Hudson is set up well for the next round. Match Rating: 2.25/5 (** 1/4)
