Last night on Smackdown Live, WWE tried something new. They held half the matches of the episode, including a Smackdown Women’s Championship match between Bianca Belair & Carmella at the Rolling Loud music festival. However, one thing of note came from this, and that was the announcement of a first ever PPV event from WWE, coming at the top of 2022.
WWE Will Have Their First Ever PPV On New Years Day
As announced at Rolling Loud by Atlanta Hawks All-Star Point Guard Trae Young, WWE will host a PPV event in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday, January 1st, 2021. This came after Trae Young was introduced by Bianca Belair following her win over Carmella. “I don’t know about you but I think New Year’s Trae would be a great name for the event, and I can’t think of a better way to bring in 2022 than with the WWE Universe,” said Trae Young during the announcement.
This is the first time a WWE PPV has taken place on New Year’s Day. While they had an event titled New Years Revolution in the mid-2000’s, that would generally take place around the 6th or 7th of the month, never on New Year’s itself. If nothing else, many fans are excited about this event being another Saturday WWE PPV, similar to that of Summerslam. Fans have been vocal in recent years about preferring Saturday night for PPV events, with school or work coming very early for most after a Sunday night event.
This Gives A Four Week Gap Between This PPV And Royal Rumble
An initial concern from fans came with this show being in close proximity to their annual January PPV of Royal Rumble. However, this shouldn’t be an issue, as Royal Rumble will likely be about four weeks away from this currently unnamed New Years Day event. Add in that the Royal Rumble itself is the main draw for the event, and that match hardly needs build, and you have a non-issue.
A strong PPV to kick off 2022 could really make the first normal ‘Road to Wrestlemania’ since 2019 feel truly special. WWE has had a rough two years of programming thanks to the pandemic, but things are looking good once again. Do you think this New Years Day show will become an annual tradition for WWE?
